Krell preamp recap

Im looking to recap my preamp with good quality capacitors that are readily available from Mouser, Digikey.
Any particular brands and models I should consider without breaking the bank of course, there are more than 40 in all.
thx

What's the original caps brands ? How old is yur Kre pre ? Perhaps it's simply ok yet. If it's not broken... then it's not broken !

Perhaps the lytics just after the diodes bridge that suffer the most may suffice.

Yu have to identify the caps in order to know what was chose and take the equivalent in the brand you want, models can change according the area in the pre.

It looks like the filter caps are Sprague, I dont recall the make of the smaller ones.

There is definitely something amiss with this pre. Though all input, outputs and controls function, it sounds like crap. It`s a model KRC-3 which at the time was a well regarded unit. I purchased it to mate with my Krell KSA-50s amplifier, I was using a KAV-300i as a preamp with very good results. When I put the KRC-3, I was shocked at how bad it sounded.
At this point, I`m willing to invest in new caps which theoretically are overdue for replacement being over 25 years old. If new capacitors dont improve the performance, what else can I do? I was expecting much more out of it.

I intend to replace all the caps with equivalent values.

Hi,

the picture is very good I suceed to focus. Seems clear this device has also be tunned xith passive parts with a particular care : carbon resistor, silver mica caps, Vishay Sprague main caps. What are the brands and type of the little black or blue lytics caps ? Sprague are build like tank of the WW2 ! solid...

All seems good, no bump, no leaks, they certainly can last ten years more ! You have some yellow tantal drop caps near ICs.... but it's risky to swap them if you are not experiened about desoldering (I don't know your diy background so just in case) : those caps are the most fragiles and should be if needed changed firstly !

You can also maybe ask in the Nelson Pass forum if the Krell was working with N Pass.

That said how you describe the sound youdon't like with this pre ? Caps may improve just a little and we are in the dimisnishing return.

Have you a capacimeter (20 USD) or a LCR meter bridge that can measure capacitance and ESR ?
An option also as he is in very good condition is to sold it and with the money you have tons of inexpensive good pre those days , second hand, brandnew or DIY.. that can marry better with the rest of the hifi ?!

Edit : the little green are Vishays and doesn't need to be swapped (film caps) as the little brown/black double bumped (silver mica)
