Dent repair - Alpair 10p.. or replace?

Finished my FHXLs a couple weeks ago and today noticed a dent in one of the cones. Cat maybe but not sure.

I'm not as familiar with full range and the impact of dents and what coatings are used on the Alpair 10ps. I would say it's small, but you can clearly feel it.

Could the be worked out by pushing from the back? If so is there something I can use to help it hold back in shape?

Or, am i looking at a new driver? If it's a loss of performance I would lean towards replacing.

Remedial measures to try to pull it out, i expect, will be in vein with th paper cone, but as Scott says not too bad. Listen to them for awhile and see what you think. They will need at least 100 hrs of modest play before you can evaluate them.

A coat of puzzlecoat (something i do 1st before EnABLing them might well help it from getting worse as you use it, so near to the VC is likely more problematic than if further out.

If this was an A10.3 i expect that whatever hit these would have caused much greater damage.

I’ve only had the 10Ps for a short time, but am slightly paranoid of the kids damaging them. One thing that helps to protect them is fibreglass flyscreen grilles, which can be taken off for critical listening.

Cheers,

Matt.

I don’t have that issue, but when i recycled a couple palletts of Monsoons i ended up with some metal grills that are perfect size, and a set sits over the A10p that Chris had for awhile, and the ex has now. Also fits nicely over the Silver Flute W14 (i have those on Tysen V2 side mounted drivers.

Thanks all. I'll see if I can work it out a bit and put in some good listening time. Will also start working on some grills to prevent future mishaps.

Cats (typing through gritted teeth).

Also, FHXL sounds fantastic! Thank you for a great design, I'm so happy with the speakers.

I had a vintage alnico EV SP15B "FR" with a jagged tear all the way from its outer surround to the whizzer area. Repaired it looked pretty bad but sounded as good or better than its unblemished mate. Grant it that EV would not be in the same league detail wise as a good small FR - but still interesting not to ruin its sound.

I had something similar happen to a Fostex 107 I stuffed back in its box after taking it out to test fit in a baffle. The hardware in the box somehow put a small crease in the cone.

I simply brushed a VERY thin single coat of Modge Podge diluted with some water over the entire cone.

It caused the paper to expand and then contract when it dried much like when you spray water on the tissue covering a balsa model airplane.

You really couldn’t even tell the difference between the driver that was creased and the untreated cone of the matching one in the pair, but I coated the second driver as well.

It's the doubt that gets me! And the fact that I JUST finished these. I'm sure I would never have noticed a difference in sound had I not seen it.

Listening is challenging because the imaging is great, it is hard to compare each channel as I notice the separation is so distinct. I was listening last night and thought "oh the bass line is definitely weaker" and then it jumped right over to the other side. I need to switch to mono mode next time.

Picking up some grill cloth today, I would prefer them open but better safe than sorry. I'll use magnets so I can take them off easily.

Thanks again all!

Assuming no damage to the suspension or coil centring, it will cause no difference in the lower frequencies. If it has any audible impact, it would be on the midband region as it fractionally affects the resonant profile of the substrate in & around that region. With the size of the dent in question, and the nature of the GRP reinforced paper cone, I wouldn't expect a major issue.

At least you can blame it on the cat!

The stress wrinkles in one of my Alpair 10.2 drivers are 100% my fault (got a bit too generous with the volume knob). I was able to reduce them by rubbing my fingernail on the back of the cone, but they are still visible and it bugs the crap out of me. I can't hear the difference at all, but the remorse continues. When I build new boxes for the pair, they are going to get grilles so I am not reminded of my stupidity.
