..While the smaller driver doesn't interest me much, the larger 8" is interesting: with decent efficiency and a lower fs than is typical for the Sd. A limitation is excursion.
For those with deep pockets, the Morel Supreme TSCM634 mid might "pair" very well with 2 of those 8"s.

Cone breakup is kinda low for the diameter - I guess that is an effect of the concave cone. That the breakup node is an issue for non-linear distortion though - for the 8" it's ok as it'll still work as a woofer crossed low ish (500Hz) in a 3-way. For the 5" i suspect 5th harmonic will be an issue at 900Hz which will limit it's use, especially because the breakup node on the 5" is enormous (15dB!).
Agreed that efficiency is really good for the Fs.

Ah, you beat me to it. 😉
Hmm. I hoped they'd have learned from the minor Horlicks that the Esoteric units have been to date -a pity as those things had potential, but the consistency or lack thereof and changes made spoiled them from a usability POV. These Epiques may have potential, although eyeballing the impedance & HD plots the 8in looks like it has some energy storage issues from about 1.4KHz. A bit harder to tell with the smaller unit; the HD seems reasonable but the impedance plot suggests there may be something going on > 800Hz or so. Either way, probably easier to work with than either the Reference or Esoterics (as the latter now are), so an interesting addition to the range.

what a shame Dayton don't have a hub in europe and asia, these are too expensive to ship from US

I've bought Dayton Audio Passive radiators from them.

Looks like that they have been working together with accuton on these drivers.
The 8" looks exactly identical to accuton c220-6-222.

But do they sell the Epiques.. actually Rumoh are well priced, so fair enough.Rumoh.eu

The issue I have is with international delivery cost from PE- their's is quite high and of course they won't put a helpful figure for customs like some smaller outfits.
Seeing as the products are mostly made in Taiwan/China, surely it wd make sense to at least have a direct outlet based in asia.

Possibly, but Dayton Audio is essentially Parts Express's 'house brand' rather than being an independent in the usual sense, so they presumably aren't all that bothered one way or the other.
I like the look of the motor & many features on these things (shades of the Magico units in styling) so will reserve judgement for now. Based on the current data they seem decent, but I'm not reaching for my piggy bank just yet either.

Dayton Audio Dayton Audio - Where to Buy
I wouldn't knock built in China in & of itself; they crank out a lot of very good things.
That said, they might be 'pretty' (insofar as a drive unit can be 'pretty' -let's be honest, Emilia Clarke they are not. 😉 ) and have what looks to be a pretty good motor, but we're looking at about £170 apiece for the 5 1/4in unit, and £221 for the 8in. Before you factor in shipping, import duties etc., as PE tend to be the main source for units like these. Probably good value in the US. Over here in the UK? Not so sure.

List price USD 399 for a 5" driver made in china - thanks but no thanks!
I'm too old to fall for that one. 🙂
Remember, All drivers have a "sound", and go from there..
The Dayton Epique series combines some of the better exotic speaker tech available in China. Great "bragging rights" waiting for a few trusted experts to measure and listen to real multi-way speakers.
Despite a Fs=26.9Hz, with a Qts=0.25 the Dayton E220CF-8 is not a woofer.
0.75cuft ported produces -F3=53Hz
0.5cuft sealed produces -F3=80Hz
2cuft ported -3db Extended Bass Shelf produces -F3=35Hz
The measured Le=0.7mh seems high based upon the description of the motor construction and measured resistance vs freq plot.
A high-end 9" woofer like the $200 Satori WO24-8 produces ported -F3=24Hz in 3cuft.
========
The Dayton E220CF-8 models well to mate with the new robust 1.1" Dayton RS28F-4 dome tweeter which can support the required 1.3kHz to 1.4kHz crossover frequency. Also a good match to 30mm Wavecor dome tweeters with attached waveguide. Both 0.7cuft ported and 0.5cuft sealed box alignments meet the -F3 < 80Hz THX single subwoofer HT spec.
The Dayton E220CF-8 models well to mate with a tweeter horn + 1" compression driver like BMS 4524 with 25mm voice coil.
Decent 2-way with a transmission line or MLTL for -F3 ~40Hz.
Good modest size 3-way with sealed E22CF-8 + Horn + 12" woofer. Controlled Directivity + Full Range = Studio Monitor.
========
The 5.25" Dayton E160CF-8 with Fs=52.5Hz and Qts=0.46 models well as the sealed midrange in a 3-way design, or smooth modest bass in a 2-way transmission line or MLTL used in a small room.
The measured Le=0.71mh seems high based upon the description of the motor construction and measured resistance vs freq plot.

It's still a "woofer" - its just one with an unusually strong motor, which often generates a more dynamic and clear result subjectivly. Typically requiring a low tuning freq. (bass reflex, lower tuning freq. than a "bass shelf") and a fairly large volume, and NOT expecting the low freq. output to be near the average. Power-handling/compression is a potential issue depending on program material because of the modest excursion. (..again though, use two and wire in parallel while accepting a larger volume than usual.)
There are better deals in pro division for far less money, with same sensitivity and good bass that will work good in largish (120 liters) volume with horn or dome tweeter crossed ad 1.3-1.4KHz and measures outstandingly flat, with low Le and very low distortion.

Epique drivers simply aren't worth it, in my opinion.

The distributors rarely stock even half the range of products and prices are sometimes really high. UK buyers at least have alternatives from Falcon

True. A pair of the 5 1/4in units costs about £340 on today's exchange rate (11 May 2018). For that, based on Falcon's current pricing (inc. VAT) here in the UK you could buy, for example:
2 x Seas W15LY001 (Excel range, Nextel cone) & have £111 left over
2 x Seas W15CY001 (Excel range, magnesium cone) & have £37 left over
4 x Seas U16RCY/P (Prestige range, woven fibreglass cone) and have £72 left over
2 x Scan Speak 15W/8530K00 Revelators and have £48 left over
2 x SB Satori MW13P-8 and have £143 left over
And that's
a/ Before you factor in the substantial shipping cost & import duties if you have to import from PE, which is probable, and
b/ Sticking to that driver size. If you didn't, then you could buy a pair of SB's 6in or 8in Satori drivers, or a pair of Scan's 6 1/2in Revelators & still have change left over. So these Dayton units will need to be very special indeed. Perhaps they are, it will certainly be interesting to see.

The Epique 8" is the driver I've been waiting for; the material, cone design, specs, performance. That Magico/ Rockport look. But for buyers in europe it is honestly better to buy Morel or pay the premium for Accuton.
Recently bought 20 x ES180ti on clearance, which largely cancelled out the (considerable) delivery cost. I know the Epique range is on special.. juat wondering if PE will sell many when the price goes up..
