AD1861 AD1862 sound & tone

Assuming you have two genuine chips : The AD1862 is better than the TDA 1543 but more complicate (double mono) to layout.

I will say : better a proven design with the TDA1543 than a bad with AD1862.

In both case sound is about the quality of the layouts, digital front end & clock, parts, I/V stage & buffer and of course power-supply stages.

imho the AD1862 is one of the best PCM dac chip made with its sibling PCM63 and of course the TDA1541 either ! I'm even not sure at ears the PCM1704 to be superior !

I personally bought mine at Rochester to be sure it was not a bad second quality refurbishing sold to a kit shop 😉

a friend of me is convinced that the AD1862 and the TDA1541 are better than the PCM1704 and the AD1955 (provided you have a perfect I / U converter).
and sounds closest to the Ultra Analog module D20400a.
Are here on diyaudio test reports between this DAC-IC's ?
Thank you for advices.

I compared the PCM1704 with AD1862, both NOS on the same powersupply (just less voltage for PCM1704), the same I/U ... result for me:
PCM1704 is more soft (more neutral in lows)
AD1862 has a more dynamic stage, is more "WAU" ... is an unsurpassed candidate yet for me ... nor the TDA1540 beat it
DAC8811 is the most tweakable R-2R dac yet, so maybe a good implementation with perfect Vref and a deglitch could do it 😀
