Best speakers/enclosure design for wall mounting

So the idea is to have shallow full-range speakers for wall mounting near a TV set. Speakers will be used for both music and movies though music quality is a priority. The only limitation in size is depth: up to 12cm, width and height are not limited.

Possible speakers that looks good from reviews:
Tang Band W5-1611SAF
Mark Audio Alpair 7
Fountek FR135EX

Any suggestions are welcome, cheers 🙂

Really any one of those could do what you want. Simply reconfigure the recommended enclosure to the dimensions you want, while maintaining the same volume and port size (if vented). WinISD can do this for you easily. Which driver is best is at least to some degree a matter of taste.

I would suggest a sheet of Deflex behind the driver, to help minimize any coloration from the shallow box. A box of that depth will have a standing wave at ~ 1400Hz, but that can be damped out.

What Greg said as to the issue with coloration that can occur in very shallow boxes ( I've hear that myself in a build from a few years ago) , and Dave at Planet10 might have a drawing squirrelled away for the A6 that would fit the bill

I've just put together a pair of these using Alpair 7p drivers and I'm very happy with the results🙂

Great work there IanLenco!

Is there a general rule-of-thumb for the mounting height of wall-mounted speakers (installed on directional stalks)?

Scanspeak 10F4424 should also be on your list, and i would look mainly at the Alpair 7 and the 10F as candidates.

A 10F and a helper woofer like the SB Acoustics SW26DBAC76 will fit in your limitatoins i think, and can cover the whole spectrum untill 30Hz. The 10F need about 0.5L sealed, the SB about 10L sealed with a 2nd order cr at 250-300Hz. Then you will have a good respons from 32-20K if your crossover is right. Total size in 18mm (ply)wood could be a box of 30x60x12cm. 30cm wide to be able to fit a 10" woofer, 12cm as your limitation, and 60 to cover the volumes taken by the speaker and the wood for the box and bracing. The subwoofer will just fit in that limitation, so it may have an impact (i would line the little space behind the magnet with felt). The woofer is about 80mm deep, and your box has an internal dept of 94mm, so not much space is left. The 10F is shallow at 44mm deep so it will fit with ease.
