Vents in a horn sub ?

Hi, I love the impact and dynamics of horn, but to get to 40 hz they get pretty big. So I was wondering, if it is possible to put vents in a W-Horn like this

or would I lose the compression and therefore it does not function like a horn anymore.

I found a picture where it seems that idea is applied

Would certainly be nice to get the lows hornloaded through the vent. But then it would have been done decades ago, I guess, so maybe there is no such thing as free lunch😉

Sebastian,

It has been done decades ago, though the ports were put in the front of the compression chamber. Compared to the horn output, the port output with such a small chamber volume is rather anemic.

Doing it as your plan shows would be possible, but the port output won't be reinforced by the horn, since Fb would be below Fc. With the port feeding in to the horn, it may actually be out of phase and reduce output in a narrow band, you would need to model it in a program like Akaback to determine if it would be an improvement.

Hi Sebastian

I just came across this old thread, and am wondering if not Roy from Klipsch actually has a patent doing just what you proposed! Klipsch also offers subwoofers with that principle!

KPT-1802-HLS

THE INDUSTRY'S ONLY FULLY HORN-LOADED, VENTED SUBWOOFER FOR THE GRANDEST AUDITORIUMS

Roy even uses that approach in the new Jubilee Klipsch Flagship at only 35.000$ per speaker!

I am not sure that it is a good idea!? Funny that the "old" Jubilee bass-bin has been discontinued! Well............?

See also US290040 of James Novak (app '55, grant '59) of the Muter Co which might've then swallowed Jensen (?).

BFM's experiences report it's okay in midhorns if you keep Fb an octave under Fc and that trying to do the same with LF needs Vrc so big that "normal" fronthorns with sealed RC and lower Fc horn makes more sense. Looks like Roy went big and active and brute-forced it, but haven't seen Jube hard-data anywhere yet (and didn't read the patent).
