Hi,
I have recently bought a nice pair of Sony SS-7200 speakers.
I would like to replace the caps on the crossover caps as they must be over 40 yrs old.
They are currently Elna 5.0v 0.47uf and some smaller values.
Can anyone recommend the type and replacements that would be an upgrade?
Thanks
Lee

Unless you are in a position to do extensive investigations, I'd exchange them like-for-like, or the 'modern' equivalents thereof. It is possible that the ESR of the caps was taken into account in the filter design, so changing to a polyprop. or similar could take this away from what was intended.
With that said, the existing electrolytics are probably clapped-out anyway, while the drivers themselves may have deviated from factory-fresh, so a bit much can be made of this. Use whatever you feel like -just don't sling a load of boutique brand components at it -it won't be worth the effort.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your reply.
The current Elnas are a light blue colour, what do you think they are?

Would the resisters and other components benefit with changing or do you think it would just be the caps?
What would you suggest using I'm not looking to go mad on the cost.
Thanks
Light blue ?
Get an eye test for color blindness.
They light grey.
The caps in there are electrolytics.
Bi-polars.
And their 50 volt, not 5 volt.
replacing them with std foil capacitors would be the most economical 'bang for buck'.
resistors and inductors, not really a need to change those.
Might also get the optician to check your eye sight for glasses.
I can't see any 0.47uf caps there.
I can see a 47uf and i think its a 4.3uf and 1.2 uf, but the photo is small and blurry.

Thanks Old'n'Cranky you live up to your user name
I really appreciate your advice and clarifying it for me. 😉
Regarding my eye site, it was nearly 2020 about 16 months ago but I had a stroke that left me 90% blind in the left eye and I have trouble reading things close up now, and I was going by the picture. I haven't opened the speaker cabs yet but used the photo by the seller, and yes it small and blury.
Still, I am hugely grateful to God that I am still alive and can enjoy life, family and music. 😀
I shall open up the speaker cabs and look at ordering the caps you mention. 😉
Do you have any brands you recommend?
Here are a couple of better pictures
Looks like 50V 47UF and 50v 22UF bipolar caps in grey 🙂

I do try to live up to my username.
Easier than youd think 😀
It's actually a clinical problem. (true story)
I sincerely hope you recover quickly.
My mum had a "minor" stroke, she did recover but it took years.
My eye site has also taken a turn for the worse the last year or two.
Obviously not as bad as yours though.
I hate getting old. everything starts failing. Bah.
Yes with those pics I can see a 47 and 22.
If you can take some pics from the sides, we might be able to see the other 3 capacitors.
Brands, I'm partial to Jantzen.
On a budget I'd go for their 'Cross caps' line.
Just be aware that any foil capacitor will be way bigger physically than the old electrolytic's.
Just something for you to consider.........
If you want to improve on those, I'd suggest using some bypass caps as well.
Heres some reading for you -> Humble Homemade Hifi
Theres a lot of controversy around the sonic differences of capacitors...
Some can hear the difference, others can't.
I will say I was given a cheap pair of three way speakers, they used electros, the treble was harsh and grainy, midrange all over the place.
I replaced the electros with Jantzen cross caps and installed the bypass caps.
major improvement.
treble is no longer harsh or grainy, midrange has cleared up. they now sound like speakers 🙂

Thanks again for your help. I will take some side pictures hopefully later today and posting again. I do think new caps will make a big difference s these must be pretty shot after 40 yrs.
I do have some other nice speakers but want to refurbish these as part of a retro system.
I'm sorry about your mum Strokes aren't great, and yes getting older is challenging.
