Townshend FAST / WAW

I have a pair of Townshend Glastonbury 1 speakers and the bass/midrange driver is damaged.Replacements are unavailable as are spares.
These are two good to bin having very well made, incredibly well damped cabinets with nice ribbon tweeters.
Can anybody suggest suitable full range replacements for use in a FAST configuration. They should take an 8 inch speaker with very little if any cabinet mods to make them physically fit.

Have a look at the EAD E130

This is closely based on the Jordan JX125. The JX125 was a refined version of the Jordan J125 used in the Glastonbury - basically an improved chassis. I can't off-hand recall how wide the chassis was for the J125 but I know the JX125 was narrower. You may find, in that case, that the EAD E170 may fit the existing baffle hole.

In any case, you will need to recalculate the port size to align it to the new driver. Alternatively, try using with the port sealed. I think the Glastonbury was about 50 litre internal volume - possibly less due to the thick plaster walls - in which case the two EAD drivers should work OK sealed but with some loss of deep bass output.

Alternatively contact sales (at) ejjordan.co.uk to see if the Glastonbury drivers can be repaired.

Hope this helps.

thanks Colin.
Did not know about EAD and the 130 looks perfect.Have contacted EAD to find out how close to Townshend original we are and what crossover mods will be needed.
Looks as though port may be right as well
Baffle hole mods to allow for size will not be difficult,if necessary.
Look forward to repairing these as they are superb when on song and failure of the bass/mid cone is now common on these so if works there will be a lot of grateful Townshend owners out there.

one wonders why that is, and if repairing the existing drivers or replacing with units with (only?) marginally improved durability would ensure against future repeat failure ?

They are quite inefficient drivers with a continuous RMS rating of 50w and therefore max spl is limited.I suspect that because they are now available at a reasonable price secondhand they are now being overdriven by poor amps by headbangers.
These were blown when I got them and spares are unobtanium.
I have another pair running off Krell KSA 80 which are sublime and reach spl levels in a 30x20 foot room that are too much for me.
They will handle lots of power but not clipping from poor amps that are overdriven.

update

Quick update.EAD JX125 now in Glastonburys with rebuilt crossover from circuit diagram kindly supplied by Max Townshend.
Superb speakers again now and would make an economical build with conventional cabinets.
Plans for MLTL are on EAD site and with two of their JX125 and a cheapish ribbon tweeter with a simple crossover at about 7kHz and BSC would sound superb.
The Glastonbury is essentially a very elaborate MLTL with very thick walls and does not seem to need BSC since the cabinet is 12 inches wide at the front.
JX 125's are on offer at the moment and are something of a bargain.
Thankyou again Colin for pointing me in the right direction

Hi Dent, are you still active on here? I have the same problem with Glastonbury's and wondered if I could have the revised crossover schematic?
Kind regards
