Marantz CD-94 spindle motor

My dearly beloved CD-94 has a spindle problem. Laser moves up and down after closing the tray, but the disk is not spinning. When I put the machine on its side, press on/off button, it makes 1 rotation, and then stops.
Should I now replace the complete drive?

Your advice is very much appreciated

Find the service manual and use the service mode to do a first troubleshoot.

Usually it's powering on the unit with 3 keys pressed. Trick is to know which keys 😀

If you see only "0" are something like this in the display, you're in. Then next key will jump to the next mode. One mode is focus, one is the arm (can then be moved with << and >>) and one is spinning the disk (maybe in a different order, can't remember). Last one is playing music.

All philips based players have such a mode i think.

Thanks Guido, I read the service manual, and indeed, the server mode is accessed by holding PLAY, STOP and Search >> simultanuously while powering on. The manual says there should be 1 zero, but my CD 94 gives a double zero. Strangely enough, the NEXT key does not switch to level 1, 2, or 3. machine looks completely dead in its further responses.

oshifis, I replaced all belt 6 months ago and that part works really well.
Any further suggestions?

Thanks,

Check the service manual for the key which progresses to the next level.
Maybe it's not next. But if it is, it's not succeeding to get to 1.

Think focus is first, but iirc it depends on the transport. If it is focus, try without a cd. You should see the lens go up and down as it is attempting to focus.

You can also look if the laser works (it needs to work for focussing). Look at it FROM AN ANGLE in without much light in the room. Not straight in (niet recht van boven). You should see a red glow around the lens.

What transport is in there? cdm0, 1 or 1mk2?

Hi Guido,
After entering into serviceloop 0 (no disc inserted), pressing NEXT key moves the laser up en down 16 times. This is according to the service manual. No visible light emitted from the laser, though.
Pressing NEXT again should start the motor to spin the disk, but this does not work.
Pressing SEARCH > and < moves the laser from center to edge and back, according to the service manual.
With disk inserted in loop 0, nothing happens at all, laser should move up and down until focussed, but it does the same 16 up/downs as without an inserted disk.

My conclusion is that the laser is not working. I do not know if this also causes the motor not to spin.

DO you know if the laser can be replaced?

Think it is possible to replace just the laser with cdm1, but i don't know too much on these units. Think you need to go through an allignment procedure afterwards. And you can't just get lasers heads easily (allthough there was a thread on this here i think).

I would try to find a working cd104 or something like that to swap the whole assembly. Check the kringloopwinkels or MP.

But first have a look at the electronics surrounding the laser. Maybe there something failed, or maybe even a powersupply problem. Wouldn't hurt to get a spare cdm1 machine anyway. I have a B&O CD-X here and a cd104 for spares, my only cdm1 stuff.

Hi EIRA,
Were you able to fix your CD 94 issue?

Mine was very similar, got the double zeros when I tried the service loop. I opened the cover and realised the CD would try to rotate but was not able to do so. I adjusted the clamper height by following the instructions in this post (see attachment). Player is singing well now. Worth a try if you still haven't been able to fix yours 🙂.

Sounds like the clamp force on the arm needs adjusting, there are 2 small adjustment screws on the clamp near the hinge part, my 94 mk2 had the same issue , simple task of just adjusting them so it has the right amount of force down onto the disc so the laser has the right distance between it and the disc surfaace

HI, I scored one from UK and just got delivered. this has the ejecting issue so I knew it was just belts. Indeed it was ejecting and I opening it up and saw one of was not going till the end to get locked. Anyway I fixed the eject issue but I dont see the disc spiniing whatsoever. When I hit play there is a tick tick sound coming near the analog outputs but nothing happens. The display shows Disc Error. The CD doesnt spin at all. I think I see a faint laser. Any things to check?

P.S: Since it was 220V I got a step up convertor of 100W. When I checked the power from DMM its giving 240 so I kept at 240. Well even 220 did not matter and was powering on.
