I just downloaded a file from there; it's the first time is about a year I've been able to. Might want to check yours as well?
It has never stopped working for me. I use it weekly.
I agree, if you want it to work all the time, you have to contribute. I've added schematics and owners manuals every year, same with vinyl engine.
Glad to hear this. It was down in May, and they said they were working on it. I’ve used it (and contributed) successfully for years until the May fail.
Does not work for me. Just this message, and a list of banned accounts.
"Sorry, but due to abuse of our free service the download server is closed.
Providing free downloads has become both expensive and frustrating due to idiots registering multiple accounts to scrape the library, and freeloaders copying our content to resell and/or repost on audio forums. As this is just my hobby, and I cover any shortfall from my own pocket, the situation has become unsustainable. I'll be considering a number of solutions to these issues in the coming days."

It sounds like well-meaning people on diyAudio (including me) have contributed to the problem. 🙁
I'd be willing to pay a small, annual fee for download abilities. But not a charge per download.
Would it be cheaper for him (the gent who runs the site) to have html versions of the pdf? Im thinking that would use less data transferring, which would lower his costs. Is that how it works nowadays? There must also be programs that automatically convert pdf-> html

Hi rif,
To be honest, would you like to store a directory of html files, each with their own subdirectory? How about having to convert each back to html and any associated problems?
If it doesn't work for the end user, there is little point in doing it that way.

Well... i wouldn't want to do any of it 😉
Maybe there's a way to convert them on demand - you click on the button for html version and it then converts it temporarily.
I really don't know how it works, just that I've seen many sites that offer a pdf or html version for their documents.

Probably not smaller, actually html could be larger. pdf supports compression in the file. Even uncompressed, I'd expect about the same bandwidth (file size). Manuals tend to have many pic's, which will explode the file size no matter html or pdf. Vector graphics in pdf though are quite efficient.
Still no luck. Whatever their filter is it says

I have no idea why HiFi Engine now has a problem with that - they certainly did not a few years ago.

I can only guess he is trying new systems to alleviate whatever issues he is having.
The problem will be not all 'fixes' actually do 'fix'.
All we can do is sit back and hope he finds a cure and reopens the site.
I wonder if someone (maybe here ??) has the tech knowledge to assist him in his endeavours ?

" Sorry, but the download server is temporarily closed."
I would not mind helping out... specially as over the years I did add a couple of pages.... I tried to contact him about this... but got no response.
IMHO, he ought to do like here, and other forums, where people contribute on a yearly basis. If you don't contribute you get to see but not download.
It's actually a PITA as I've gotten used to get some manuals for vintage stuff that I've bought. Not many, mind you, but it is a great resource.
If he can't afford it, then maybe he could sell, or give it away, it to someone who is willing to maintain it.

It sucks... IMHO, he's being selfish. Either take care of it or just give it away to someone who will maintain it.
As it is, he's hogging the information. Something WE never meant to see when we were working on the RFCs to create the Internet. Maybe I ought to charge him for the work I did on the Internet backbone?
Sorry, but his actions are really ******* me off... either take care of it or shut it down and give it to someone who will maintain it.

Downloads
Sorry, but due to rising costs and ongoing abuse, the download server is temporarily closed while I look for a way to dramatically reduce both.
What an absolute waist of time and the resources that have been given him.
IMHO, he's abusing the help that has been given him.
You know, he doesn't even own the materials that he is hoarding. So, he shouldn't be bitchiiiing about people "abusing it". (*) Just charge a subscription to pay for his hosting services and be done with it. And for those of us who donated stuff, then what do we get? The shaft from him.
Forget it. I'm done with him. I've offered my money, he's just wasting all our times. Perhaps we ought to go build an alternative somewhere.
(*) Mind you, I don't.
