Why aren't there tire puncture strips at freeway entrances

if you are attempting to enter the wrong way they are in the up position and will puncture your tires not allowing you to proceed any further.
OK, now you have a dead car IN the exit ramp, impaled on spikes, probably whiplash-ed to death, with other folks coming off the speedway at a mile a minute, NOT expecting a dead car there.
If they'd buried all them truckers lost in them woods
There'd be a tombstone every mile
Count 'em off there'd be a tombstone every mile

So what is worse? That or allowing the wrong entry car to get up to 70 mph going the wrong way on the freeway and crashing head on into another car going at 70 mph. At least at the off the ramp the speeds of both cars will be signifcantly less.

This is the Lounge section of the Forum where anything can be discussed. I could easily ask the same question about smoking, food, Wordle, and dozens of other topics currently being discussed here.

Actually, I thought that this would be a very good place to bring it up since there are a lot of very smart people who regularly contribute here.

It is being used in austria (and probably elsewhere), but there are some serious disadvantages, mainly expensive maintenance and liability in case of malfunctioning.
Also imagine you had to stop exactly at that area and when starting again your car rolls back just slightly.

See here (image) and here (news about someone driving on with flat tires)
So the question is, despite some serious disadvantages, have there been any high speed head on collisions on the roads where these have been installed. Or have they prevent those types of accidents from happeining.

It is getting close to the moment that phones cause more deadly accidents than alcohol does on the roads.
I watched one yapping on the phone with the wheels grinding along the curb stones. At a side turning the driver wondered over and hit the curb stone at the other side. The curb stone removed one of the wheels from the car while the driver carried on yapping on the phone in was was then a tricycle with the throttle still set for speed. The car almost rolled during the roadside modification.

Rumble strips may be a good idea, speed humps are not. When they put them in residential areas they have the opposite effect of what they are supposed to. If you go over them at 15 mph they will send you into the middle of next week. Go over them at 60 and it’s just a little bump.

If someone is so impaired that they don’t notice that all the reflector dots that separate lanes are reflecting red instead of white no amount of signage or strict fines will help. You may not have ever noticed this but those dots are white in the right direction but red when going the wrong way! It’s a built in safety feature for those who are just confused and went in the out ramp, it happens. As we know, people always think they are smarter than they really are when drunk so no amount of anything’s that will stop them from doing what they want to do. For the freedom we enjoy we also must accept a certain amount of risk. The number of people killed on the road is vanishingly small compared to miles driven but when someone is killed in a collision it is a tragedy. This is the risk that must be accepted in a free society. Do you really want the government controlling every aspect of your life? They can’t get right what they are supposed to do now, do you want them to do more? I’ll take my chances with less government and more autonomy.

The number of people killed this way is very very small, it makes the news due to the rarity of it happening. It’s hard to justify the expense and work that would be needed. More people are killed by stepping off the curb and being hit by a car but we don’t put guard rails on every inch of the street. It’s sad but it’s a fact of life and death.

There is a big difference. In the case of someone stepping off the curb and being injured or killed by a car it is the sole action of that person that is the cause. It's hard to protect people from themselves.

But in the case of a high speed head on collision on a freeway the people being injured or killed, except for the wrong way driver, are not the ones causing the accident.
