Hi
All
Which is a better driver please
The Visaton W300-8 or Peerless 830669
The Visaton has a foam surround which I have read can rot and does not last
The Peerless has a rubber surround which seems better
From reading here people have had good results with the Peerless driver
The peerless has a higher spl
This is going into a REL Qbass enclosure
Please help
Thanks

Those are speakers filed under 'woofers' and not subwoofers, the Visaton being a cheap one and the Peerless a better performer, I guess. Peerless produces the XLS subwwofer.
XS stands for Extra Stroke 😱🙄
Same for Visaton: the woofers intended for subwoofer applications are TIW XS 200 and 250. The 12" version of the TIW has no XS label...

Thanks but these are the only two that can be replaced with the REL
which one would be better please
which one would be better please
You should take a look behind the driver, where usually is written the impedance of the speaker. You should not look only at the diameter...
The one that fits, electrically and acoustically. And power...I see that the REL is 40 W/80 W peak, so nowadays that would be 'low power'.
I guess the Peerless costs more>it's better
You have to check impedance first, 'cos if the old one was 4Ω and the new one is 8Ω, the output power will be less

both are good ones for the REL
but the specs vary and the one has a foam surround as other has rubber
one the minimum frequency is 30 Hz and other minimum is 32 Hz
One the SPL is higher than other
which is better i dont know
I know from reading here that foam rots so does not last long

It's not the minimum frequency...it's the resonant frequency in free air, it's the point where Z is maximum.
..the Visaton unit looks awful, I mean, it's a piece of the past ( not because of the foam surround...!)...You need 100 l enclosure to make low bass.
Modern units allow small enclosures and high power ...

Just measure the old unit with the tester set for resistance. It reads DC ( resistance) and not AC ( Z=impedance) so the value results a little lower, i.e. 3 Ω for 4Ω speakers and 6-7 Ω for speakers having nominal 8 Ω impedance
I downloaded the instructions/owners manual of thatg REL Qbass but there isn't mentioned the impedance of the speaker - I didn't expect to find it but -who knows...
FWIW, some info of use here, so looks like the Peerless is the way to go: REL Q BASS driver Westra sw-300-2808 | AVForums
