That is the question, isn't it. What is the ultimate goal? Judging from that vid, it appears curiosity is waiting to kill the cat perpetually as long as funding keeps flowing. Those involved in the research may not have rhyme or reason but the ones providing the funds are poised to reap the rewards.

Oh.., yea, for the benefit of all.:scratch2:

Cracking Night on Radio 5 Live tonight. Presenter Colin Murray is up for a go at three Astrophysicists from the Cern LHC collider. 😀

Very friendly 29 March crowd. Radio 5 live - Listen Live - BBC Sounds.

Unusually intellectual crowd. For sure we seem to have New Physics. So far, leptoquarks, Black Holes and even more massive Bosons discussed.

"Dark Matter" or "Dark Energy" ? 95% of everything.

LIsten. I am out of here. Fascinating Radio. Talk tomorrow. 🙂

OK, REFERENCES! Or it means nothing.

Colin Murray - 29/03/2021 - BBC Sounds

The action starts at 33.40. Hope y'all can get this Worldwide.

Apparently last week, Colin Murray had an hour on the latest Dead Sea Scrolls discovery. It was so popular he has decided to have a stab at this weeks wheeze, the 3 sigma tentative discovery at the Large Hadron Collider.

If I have spelt these names right his guests on zoom are:

Eirann Mac. Donald
Sophie Gadnezeres
Eathan Arsegel

Enjoy. Nice to have an hour long science discussion that doesn't patronise. Very good channel, Radio 5 Live. Of course I always prefer the Footie and da GeeGees on R5L. But this is exciting too.

Isn't it already?:xmastree:
By saying "the universe is our oyster", I meant that basic physics research may eventually endue us with the ability to travel anywhere in the universe.

Lots of science fiction dreams have already come into existence, so why not others?

I see basic research, such as that undertaken by particle physicists, as an investment into the future of the human race.

Come share my dream! :cheerful:

Of course not, they're the dupes. Sorry to have to say that but you did ask.
Incidental dupes, to be correct.
I should have said "willing dupes". And I mean no disrespect. I'm sure they're not naive to be aware the fruit of their labor is being exploited by those with means at their disposal, waiting to pounce. It's always been that way. But we're living in a very precarious world right now and outcomes are becoming more and more critical to our survival. I think a paradigm shift is in order where those with the power of knowledge may be better suited to oversee/arbitrate for how their discoveries are implemented. OIW, they should have the power to put the brakes on.
