Brainstorming Purifi 1et400a amps

By Norman Tracy

Class D Has Arrived

Regarding input buffering you do not have to buffer. What Purifi calls the EVAL1 is a three module set including a interface board that plugs into a stereo pair of 1ET400A amplifier modules providing simple secure connections. The EVAL1 interface circuit board has a buffer about which the user guide states "pre-gain stage is made with a dual OPA1612 configured as Balanced/single-ended to balanced gain stage". The manual also describes how gain can be set OR the buffers bypassed and input signal fed directly into 1ET400A.

If you are a DIYer who wants to use EVAL1 as an entry to Purifi amplification the quick easy way is to connect signal input directly to the EVAL1 XLRs. If your source is single ended take note of user guide instruction in section 3.5 "If a single ended input is need then connect GND and IN- to the negative analog input."

Some of the discussions I referenced deal with direct connections to the 1ET400A modules. More advanced DIYers and manufacturers looking to differentiate their product will ditch the OPA1612 buffer. Like Hypex and ICEpower the 1ET400A have medium input impedance in the 2k to 4k range. That falls in the range where any op-amp or other gain device should have no problem driving it. Yet perceptive listeners report improvements in subjective sound when a preamp with more drive capability is employed.

Kit connection and buffer board is the weak I suspect.

If we have patience I suppose there will be other alternative SMPS, cheaper and better than Hypex. From Cresnet and PURIFI at least.

Alternative SMPSs already exist.
I got an email from Kim Nordtorp Madsen at Purifi stating "The 1ET400A02B have a very good power supply ripple rejection and can therefore accept almost any power supply as long as it can deliver the needed power with in the specified supply range."

Also, when I suggested to use Connex SMPS800RE or SMPS600RxE (configure at +-65V), together with a small Meanwell IRM-10-15 to provide the VDR (connect the 0V of the Meanwell to the -V of the Connex and use the +15V of the Meanwell as VDR) confirmed this would work perfectly. And all costs less than 150EUR instead of 215EUR. But the difference is not that big, if you include case and Purifi modules, it will be about 5% of the total BOM. Not sure it is worth the hassle to search further.

So we need cheaper SMPSs, not necessarily "better", but it is also not something to fret about, my friend.

Better components is very easy. Better performance? Measurements will be needed to corroborate them. In any case, if a good audio system is already available, the most logical thing is to wait a while, at least for a better connection board.

I am not in a hurry. Meanwhile I keep improving the sound in my two audio systems, something that never ceases to amaze me.

Why would better "performance" be needed?

Very clean power to the input board. Or the Universal Buffer (Neurochrome, Tom Christiansen), specially adapted to PURIFI.

The audio system quality will be conditioned by the weakest link. Unfortunately, another one usually appears when you eliminates the bottleneck.

Maybe
you have one. Can you hear the difference?

Yes, I get it. You did not understand my question. Why would better performing SMPSs be needed for the Purifi Eval1 kit if it already has very good PSRR and SMPSs like the Hypex or Connex have low noise/ripple?

For Tom's buffer I am going to use something like the DIYinHK 0.56uV power supply.

Very good PSRR the amp module.

Yes, and I shall use the Evail1 board just as an adapter. (well, not initially, since Tom's buffer cannot be ordered yet and also the power supply will have to come from HK, but you get the idea.) I do not think having the on boar opamp of the buffer working will pollute the rest. Also, I believe the sound quality problems other folks had when connecting their DAC directly to the Eval1 with bypassed buffer were due to the low input impedance of the modules. Indeed, once a preamp was connected, with probably better driving capability than the output stage of the DAC, sound improved (I remember reading it, and I think you shared it).

Review and Measurements of Nord One NC500 Amp | Page 11 | Audio Science Review (ASR) Forum

With PURIFI 1ET400A, without fans (NC500 version yes).

Very accurate gaincontrol in 3db steps (0,01dB channel accuracy on all steps).
Custom buffer with OPA1612 and INA1620 opamps with extremelsy low noise. (16-20uV depending on gain)
CMRR of minimum 89dB at 1kHz.
Balanced input only.
Bridgable.
3kW power supply.

Some info from Benchmark on speaker wire connector.

In our lab tests we have found that heavy-duty 40-amp SpeakON™ connectors consistently outperform spade lugs, pins, and banana plugs. The SpeakON™ connectors provide a reliable low-impedance connection that can withstand high-currents. Of the more traditional speaker connectors, we have found that locking banana plugs provide the next best connections. In contrast, spade lugs and pins often provide poor connections. Spring-type (non-locking) banana plugs almost always provide poor connections and should be avoided.

The Benchmark AHB2 power amplifier is so clean that poor speaker connections can easily create more distortion than the entire power amplifier. We have seen this many times in the lab. The effects of poor speaker connections can easily be measured when testing the AHB2 power amplifier. We have learned that we cannot accurately measure the AHB2 unless we use SpeakON™ connectors or high-quality locking banana connectors.

My idea was and is: speakOn in the DIY PURIFI.

I like very much my modded KEF Q100 5.25" coaxial speakers -> they need better connectors or... my last tweak to increase the contact between metals.

After, I will need new speaker cables (now Kimber Kable 8 PR), with speakOn and banana connectors.

They were an irresistible bargain to me: only 7 € by meter.

Star-quad geometry, of course!

If DIY speakers, then speakOn too, but I LOVE my little coaxials.
