I need a built PSU for First Watt F5 (HELP)

Maybe this is the correct forum (and not the Pass one).
I'm a very newby in electronics but I would like to try to build a Pass F5.
Only the F5 board and not the PSU, so I need a built PSU.
Best trafo than switching type...
Output should be +/-24 V plus the Ground with about 300W.

Please help me to choos the right one!!

So to generate a supply giving +24 volts DC, -24 volts DC and a centre ground would need a transformer with either an 18-0-18 volt AC winding or a one with two separate 18 volt windings that can be series connected.

If the amp needs a 300 watt supply (i.e. it actually draws 300 watts when idling) then I would suggest using a 500va or 625va rated transformer.

You might struggle to find a ready built PSU for this. There generic bare boards on ebay that would require you to add suitable caps together with a chassis mount bridge rectifier.

Having looked at the circuit I'd say you need a 500VA toroid for a stereo amp. So big and heavy ;)
 
Danilo , being a newbie it's not a problem , but you must at least understand a minimum of eletricity , even for the amplifier board :)

if you connect together the + and the - of each PSU you get your 0 v , and you repeat the job for the second channel , so you need 4 PSU , it's simple as that ;)


but building the PSU board is far more easy than the amplifier board :cool:

If you use switching supplies then you need to be sure that the zero volt (0V) of the output is 'free floating' and not connected to mains ground via the mains leads. If this is not the case then the supplies are not suitable.

You get -/+ 24 volts by simply connecting the two outputs of each supply in series, just like you would two batteries.

So you connect the plus 24 volt output of one to the 0V of the other. That connection point then becomes your audio ground and you then have +24 volts and - 24 volts as measured from that point.

This is probably not what you want to hear but I suggest you build a First Watt power supply to go with your F5 boards. The power supply is very simple. The advantages are that you will have a First Watt F5 as Nelson Pass intended and you will hopefully be able to trouble shoot it easily whereas switching power supplies are a mystery to most diyers (me included). Imagine a switching power supply stop working a few years down the road - what to do? Whereas a simple First Watt supply would be simple to diagnose. There have been many FW power supplies built by diyAudio members so help is only a few key strokes away.

The First Watt power supply is no more difficult to assemble than the amplifier boards, so if you can assemble the amplifier boards, you can assemble a power supply.

I have used two 24v 5A SMPS bricks in series with the common as GND on an M2. It works fine, in fact, it has no 60Hz hum. $40 and some soldering will get you there. 2.5A load for both channels poses no problem as that is 1/2 rated capacity.

This is going to be the easiest and least expensive 25w Class A amp PSU you will find. Also you never expose yourself to mains voltages. Make sure the outputs do not have their 0v referenced to earth ground.
