Anybody identify these older drivers?

Hi Guys,

I've been on the lookout for some reasonably priced speaker enclosures to use for my projects instead of relying on my own dodgy woodworking skills when I came across this old 3 way minus woofers. It also came with a cheap all in one stereo + speakers that I'll stick in my office or workshop. Grand sum of $10, not bad at all.

I had expected to find ultra cheap components inside but they seem of much better quality than the last few I've played with. Can anyone shed any light on them? Is the midrange refoamable? Is it worth refoaming? The tweeter has an interesting spongy area around it, most likely a diffraction aid? I can find some info on a Rotel RL850 but not an RL860?

The soft area around the tweeter is definitely for diffraction control. It looks similar to a fostex ft28d. The midrange looks a lot like an old phillips unit. Not really worth the trouble to fix.

Not really familiar with what speaker resources there are in Perth but it's probably worth taking the time to plan your project, including the cabinet, and do it right rather than trying to force found items to fit. If you don't want to get into building, etc, then maybe it's just a matter of buying something outright. The used market is a great place to look as well made speakers depreciate quickly on value but not on performance.

These look like your speakers, but complete with woofer!

Personally, I'd focus on the speaker cabinets alone as refoaming the existing drivers may not be worth the time and effort in terms of results.

But crucially, have you tested the drivers individually to see if they are all working?

Thanks for the input badman.

Call me crazy but this kind of messing around is my cup of tea:)
If I was into ultimate solutions I'd simply do as you say, the used market is good value (less so in Perth mind you) I like to muck about and slowly gain new skills.

That said, I do believe that the enclosure could be easily modded with very little if any compromise for a number of builds that would save me time/money/effort.

OOh, Hi Galu,

Very interesting. No I have not tested the speakers at all. I really purchased them for the enclosures with the bonus of a cheap stereo system for my office. I was just surprised to encounter any signs of quality at all, an actual crossover, stuffing, proper tweeter, decent sized midrange enclosure etc etc

+1 for the 'mucking about' approach as the process can be both fun and educational. However, I've got to say that I've made one or two horrific sounding speakers that way!

If you're not into speaker simulation software then at least start your project by choosing a woofer which matches the internal volume of the cabinet and your preferred type of loading (sealed or ported). But you probably know that already!

Have fun! :)

I have the same affliction with the attempted polishing of excrement - though to me old mid-fi speakers are more like an interesting bit of driftwood. Add glitter! My current time sucker is a ten inch three way with a potted 5" mid and I have determined that the plastic pot generates hash in the upper end of its range due to reflection. I fashioned a new enclosure which allows an inch of damping fluff (fiberglass) with the same internal volume and the sound opened up, a bit like what you get by turning off a fan in the room.

I'll see your midrange modification and raise you....

Well this is interesting.

Along with the enclosures I got a cheap stereo thrown into the bargain, the owner had said one of the speakers wasn't working and to be honest I'd barely paid them any attention until this evening.
Turns out the system uses a form of biwring/active crossover or something? Sounds not bad, perfect for a noisy workshop office. Tempted to pull it apart for a closer look.

Both speakers are working, the previous owner was obviously flummoxed by the 4 wire speakers and had incorrectly set them up.

I read a vintage review of a bi-amped micro/mini system in one of my hi-fi mags some time back.

It was cabable of high quality results, but wasn't the Panasonic you show in your photo.

Out of interest, what is the model number?

I've tested the speakers with just the lows and highs attached, they do what they say. It'll be interesting to see what kind of filtering is happening? Is it quad amped?
