How to save a laptop that has been on hold for five months ? Is there a way to access the computer without entering a password as i forgot its login password.
If it is a windows user password, not an issue, remove the hard drive, place it in a usb caddie and copy your files on to another computer.
If a hard drive password. That is it, no way of recovering any data.

Or boot it from a bootable USB pendrive with Linux, then you get access to the HDD. There are also rescue CD-s around and good descriptions on their use on the net.
If the hdd has a password, it is not possible to access anything, not even to re format the drive! But, we don't know which password is involved. So we are guessing.
Thanks , can i boot it from bootable USB pendrive with Windows ?Or boot it from a bootable USB pendrive with Linux, then you get access to the HDD. There are also rescue CD-s around and good descriptions on their use on the net.

Assuming Windows laptop and drive not encrypted or otherwise locked.
Many small Linux distributions/utilities can blank or allow new password to be set. Just pick one and write it to bootable USB stick.
However, Win-fricking-10 may cause more problems if it is creator's update and the drives are never really closed (WIN10 tends to hibernate/Suspend leaving the drives apparently active). In which case you will need to boot at least a small Linux dist to "remove_hiberfile" to mount it r/w.
You may need to web search a little to refine the method.

Maybe yours have USB 3 that drivers missed in Windows and have to add it, search for "Add drivers hirens boot usb".
Thanks for the info. It was an older server (xeon e3-xxx), booted from CD drive - a bit more difficult to add drivers. But I will look at it, thanks.
