Hi Guys
Just a curious thought. Do you guys have any favourite speakers from that era ?
Somehow from what’s available today to me has become too commercialised & also the crazy asking prices that we see. I’ve kept my ML Odyssey since new, have maintained, repaired & ugraded the speaker. Till now I still find it sounding great when compared to newer ML models. The other speaker that I like are the Revel Ultima Studio. Yep would be great to hear your views & thoughts
Cheers & Thanks

Oh yes those Mission Speakers its was quite popular back then.
Always hear good things about the Duntechs but never a chance to ever audition them.

The 90's were when my DIY obsessions started. Not being able to afford the bits of kit i really wanted.
KEF Reference 4
Audiostatic ES3000
Active ATC100
At the time all i could do was audition them in hifi shops but have owned them all secondhand since. I still have the KEF Reference 3 and 4

Yes that was the time when I got into the hobby Snax.
Re NHT 3.3, I got to hear them & it wasn’t to my ears as good in the bass as Corey Greenberg rave about & this goes for Thiels & ML that I heard as well. Perhaps the low mounted bass woofer does not work well on concrete building that we have around our region. The solution for my set up is to raise my ML off the floor by 3-4 inches off the floor.

My favourite speaker is a 1980's Fane12-50WRMS in a W bin.
It always sounds best of the dozen speakers I have.

Now that’s an interesting speaker Nigel. Looks sort of like the La Scala bass bin.
That's just the speaker on ebay before I bought it.
I put it in a Fane design W bin.

It must sound pretty good Nigel. I’ve always a soft spot for horn speakers. Use to listen to a friend’s properly set up Altec A7 has created quite an impression on me but the size of those speakers is tough for domestic enviroment.

On the first disco I worked for in 1977 as a DJ the boss bought in a couple of "Orange" folded horn speakers. I liked the sound of them.
My speakers aren't that big about 32 inches high by 18 inches by 18 inches.
This sounds interesting Nigel, smaller then the La Scala width wise. Does the bass goes low like around 40 hz ?

I haven't tested them. They don't seem to go down very low.
However, being horn loaded they are very efficient.
I have another W bin which is loaded with a Fane 15-600 and that is better for bass.
The W bin ticks my interest Nigel but seems like it does not go low. So far as high effciency speakers goes, I think the Altec A7 is a very clever design as it is only 2 way & has bass that goes low enough. My friend tells me it can go down to 40 hz but Im not too sure but when listening to double bass it does have the attack & force that you can hear.
Thanks again for sharing.

When I ran my own mobile disco in the seventies, I attended a disco road show which used exclusively Orange equipment. The combination of valve amplification and W bins filled the local concert hall effortlessly. The W bins may not have gone subterraneously low, but delivered great slam and impact to the dance floor. On the first disco I worked for in 1977 as a DJ the boss bought in a couple of "Orange" folded horn speakers. Remember DJ Emperor Rosco's Orange Road Show?
