18 inch precision devices makes great OB system
There is a guy in Milton Keynes using this in open baffle...
http://www.precision-devices.com/file-downloads/PD1851-2-DATASHEET-310114.pdf
He had a PHL midrange (6 inch}and Beyma TPL tweeter and the system was really beautiful, to e honest if I could afford the drivers and DSP I would clone it in a heartbeat!
He used a DSP for crossovers and Eq and had some mega analog to digital convertor, both running on batteries!
He only had a turntable and LP's so I couldnt hear any of my test tracks but his LP's sounded better than anything else i have ever heard.
He had 6 seperate power amps, one for each driver, they were solid state class AB and all rated at 100 watts per mono block.
The sound was effortless and dynamic... getting goose bumps thinking about it!
It’s a shame Precision Devices don’t seem to make a woofer that would be suitable for OB as they are based fairly near to where I live.

Over the years I've come to the conclusion that slam is an artifact. A darn fun one, but mostly an artifact of woofers, amps and microphones. Only a close up bass drum has the same slam in acoustic music.I guess it all depends what yuor listening priorities are, if it's essentially music ..the 'slam' is not really necessary.
But if you are a typical modern concert goer, your live reference will be amplified music played thru dozens of expensive drivers with 1000s of watts behind them. Slam becomes part of the sound.
Yes and this probably goes without saying that you may need to add equaliation depending on your woofer so you need to consider this as part of the amplification you intend to use.You can use any woofer for OB. Just a matter of air displacement. One member had high praise for Precision Devices in OB applications.
My mate uses Eminence Beta 15, flat down to 30Hz in his room with no EQ. This is why these speakers are regarded as ideal OB drivers.
I use Faital Pro 15PR400. These are not considered as OB drivers in general, and I have added 9dB of boost at 50Hz. Easy for me as I bi amp. And they sound better than Eminence (imho). But my mate will never agree
So you are right, you can use drivers not spec.d for OB use.

I’ve just come across these 12” woofers from SBACOUSTICS that are designed for OB. 4 per side might be nice. People seem to highly rate their drivers.
Anybody heard these particular ones?
Just realised that these were mentioned in post 2 of this thread. What do you think of them Erik?

Displacement matters the most here.
But if we want to know how many angels can stand on the point of a pin...
For me, an ideal woofer for OB should be the one that increases harmonic distortions evenly as the volume increases.
This is not necessarily a spekaer optimised for high linear excursion.
High xmech could be desirable too...

Hmmm, don't think I've ever seen the Beta 15 on OB. But why not, with the right crossover it could be nice. Decent Fs and Q for OB.My mate uses Eminence Beta 15, flat down to 30Hz in his room with no EQ. This is why these speakers are regarded as ideal OB drivers.
Selenium made some inexpensive 15s with a Qts of 0.7 and a well behaved top end that I really liked on my Lounge Lizard OBs. I think they have been discontinued.
Ref thread for open baffle
This thread is the holy grail for open baffle.... Stig Erik is a very clever guy, with plenty of money and resources to build and test a whole range of open baffle designs.
If you spend a few days reading the whole thread it will save you a lot of time and money as well as give you a huge amount of information.
My open baffle dipole with Beyma TPL-150
I’m now thinking 4 x 12” per side rather than 2 x 15” . . . . . ,

A friend of a friend heard my system and decided that he wanted an OB system as well. But due to constraints dictated by size of living room and WAF, he said that he wanted 2 X 12" woofer per side.I’m now thinking 4 x 12” per side rather than 2 x 15” . . . . . ,
I had 2 Dayton PS220-8 sitting around doing nothing so thought that they might be nice on an OB with a helper woofer. Obviously I can't listen top every speaker out there and sometimes you gotta make a decision based on data so after looking at lots of driver specs I chose this Eminence bass drivers. https://www.eminence.com/pdf/Legend_BP122.pdf
So speakers were finished on the weekend. First order crossover at 200Hz. On first listen, no eq is required. Of course these speakers don't sound as good as an OB with 2 x 15" but within the constraints given I think that they came out pretty well. ANd they will improve with some run-in. 4 of them per channel would be much more fun. A cheaper alternative to the SB Acoustics drivers that you have already mentioned, but unfortunately I can't tell you how they compare soundwise.

Hi,
indeed, I think I am an early adopter of this woofer I built one speaker and can only confirm they "make sound" - haven't done any quality assessment yet. My current speaker uses 4x WS25e, a 10" cheap Visaton unit - so not a good comparison for the SBs.
Erik
That would work. About the same surface area as 2x18" which also works very well. Think about form factor, displacement and costs differences between the two.I’m now thinking 4 x 12” per side rather than 2 x 15”
So I read through the adventures of StigErik thread It’s a great read but a shame that most of the photos no longer work. He certainly seemed very happy indeed with the RD75 ribbons he ended up with. Pity they are no longer available. I may have to make some of those H frame subs, but I don’t think I’ll be going any bigger than 2 x 18” woofers per sub.
For what frequency range?I may have to make some of those H frame subs, but I don’t think I’ll be going any bigger than 2 x 18” woofers per sub.
