It took me a few minutes, but I got it. Its from the early 70's, at first I thought Spooky Tooth, but that wasn't right. Next guess, Uriah Heep, bingo first song on the album (OK hard drive).

The song is The Wizard from the Demons And Wizards album. There are several examples on YouTube including this old live video:

For my guess, the band's name is actually Sniff 'n' the Tears.
