Funniest snake oil theories

Umm ... if you read my last post correctly i was not accusing you of being confused , i was the one confused at your reply ie " doesn't matter " and the bit about texting idiots ,
the post/video is a lighthearted look at expensive cables that, as you say, some swear by and can justify the cost for the " improvement" in sound and others point and laugh at such claims .
It was not some sort of personal attack on you which was the impression i got by your post/s.

I didn't take it as a personal attack, I just think too many people take this hobby too seriously.
The guy I was referring to is the worst case scenario: he pontificates endlessly on meaningless babble, and says everyone's system but his is ****.
Any disagreement with his views gets the statement that you must be deaf if you disagree.

OK i understand now , yep plenty of people like that in the HI FI world ,apologies for the misunderstanding.

Leaving cables/wires aside...how about turntables. I bought a Dual 1249 new around 1975 and it still works great.

I occasionally go into hi-end stereo stores just to kill time and maybe listen to some real good stuff. When ever I've mentioned my old Dual they almost laugh and basically say, that is old technology, new TTs are vastly better, and they try to sell my a Project or Rega.

I've read specs of numerous TTs and my old Dual is pretty comparable for wow and flutter, plus I like it. I have also been told the auto changer can't be as quiet as a manual TT. I don't buy that for a minute. It is doing nothing when a LP is playing. Bottom line is, I think, TTs are also soaked in a lot of snake oil.

While I think we are all in violent agreement, there is SOMETHING to the notion that some stereo gear is so impoverished that one could not hear an improvement provided by one component being changed.

That said, USB and ethernet cables are (as the guy in the You Tube review points out) are not going to make any substantive difference in audio quality. Bits is bits.. And the only thing a cable MIGHT do is reduce ground noise transfer between the boxes, but in most cases that is not going to do much if anything to the sound quality.

Then there are the cable directionality folks....

And the power plug folks! Did you see that the guys who sell the tuning chips also sell AC power plugs for between 65 and 265 euros?

I am pretty certain that a 265 euro power plug will perform as well as a $2.65 power plug when plugged into the wiring in a typical house. There MAY be something to power conditioners that remove noise from the AC lines, butt he noise isn't caused by the power cable or the plug..it's caused by your neighbor's AC unit, your TV and the other neighbor's table saw...

And then there are the "tuning sticks"
6moons audio reviews: Akiko Audio tuning sticks

and of course the Shunyata Denali power conditioner with its special microphonic resonance dampers..for a mere $4K.. Of course, if microphonics on the power cables are really that big of a problem, then you probably need to vibration isolate your entire listening room!!

I always wanted a Dual turntable when I was a kid, don't know why, I knew they were good, there was something about the way they looked. However I bought into the CD culture in 1985, a Memorex something or other for £250! A lot of money. Re the incredible amounts of money some people sink into their turntable, doesn't seem at all reasonable when you consider the intrinsic limitations of the media. A while ago I overheard a lady on the train, explaining to her granddaughter that grandpa had just bought a bamboo plinthe for his Linn Sondek, cost £1000 she said, and improved the sound, she was convinced as well, talk about faithful!

No I'm not confused. My conclusion is all wire sounds the same, but there are those who think they hear differences others cannot, and hearing a different opinion seems like an attack on all their preconceptions, scientific evidence notwithstanding.

Are you confused?

I think other aspects of the system needs to be improved before you will hear a difference. For one, if your system does not show at least a 12db drop in energy in the CSD chart in the first 0.4ms, it is highly likely you will not hear differences between cables.

DUAL was my second TT the classic starter deck of the late 80's early 90's ,they have recently made a return with a new range , original company too not just some junk selling on the brand name like Argos did with Wharfedale for awhile .
I still have a Dual 506, with an ADC Gold cartridge.
Still like it, too, after recapping it, and rewiring the corroded and broken output leads.
It's a secondary deck now, as I got a Sony PS-X600 Biotracer locally, at a great price.
With the Sony, I keep extra headshells with a few different cartridges around; it's so easy to change the sound to suit the records- just a few seconds to swap out, and then rebalance the tonearm.
Recently I was at the Soundroom, and asked a salesman about the newer decks.
He asked if I was happy with the speed accuracy, the antiskating, and if I could hear any rumble or hum at my listening levels.
Then he said: go buy some records, the new decks spin the platter around, and output an audio signal, just like my turntables.
I think it's probably a good store.

Does anyone know a really good dual turntable repairer. I think my 1249 could use a cleaning and relube, especially of the main bearing. It's never been touched since 1975 except for me doing belt replacement a few times.

Thanks,
henrylrjr

There's a store/repair shop which specializes in vintage equipment, and they ship anywhere- Innovative Audio, in Surrey, B.C., Canada.
With the weak Canadian dollar these days, that may work for you.
In North Vancouver, B.C., Canada, there's a record store which also repairs and restores vintage turntables, called the Turntable Shop.
But I'm sure you have well regarded shops nearer to you.
