Direct Drive DSD

Cool! What do you think of Sonny's DAC/Discrete output stage? You must have had it for a while now.

Can't do native DSD on my i7 MacBook with Win7/OSX dual OS- not supported!
with AudioLinux - won't boot on MAC. Although x86- based, somehow Apple has locked out it from nefarious tinkering 🙁

PCM about the same as my ESS DAC

Looks like I have to get a new PC for Linux audio. Core i7 PCs to run HQPlayer are pretty expensive!

Just get that cheap $135 USD NUC I was talking about. It doesn't matter what OS you use as a server. Better sound from an NAA setup anyways.

Did you try the discrete output stage with your ESS DAC?

I run a Macbook pro 7i dual boot as well.

What USB card are you using?

DoP under windows work for me with HQPlayer up to DSD128 with the TUSBaudio DSD trial driver. As long as the USB card puts out I2S DSD, it should work. The Wave OI board has been reported to support upt to DSD256, but I've not tested this yet.

I was expecting the Amanero would be up to the job.

I got Audiolinux to run on my MacBook. Just need to make bootable stick and hold down option key at boot up. But that cheap NUC powered by LPS sounds way better anyways.

I am surprised! I have got the original USB stick as supplied by AudioLinux just to make this easier. It boots nicely on my low power Win7 netbook but will not on my MacBook. Does recognize the USB as boot disk on option key but the Linux boot crashes! Piero from AudioLinux tried his best to troubleshoot but gave up eventually and then declared AudioLinux not supported on Apple computers. Now with all the tinkering the USB stick will not even boot on the WinPC🙁 Btw, my MacBook has dual GPU modules, one Intel and the other Radeon. Was meant for 3d animation work and Piero thinks this is somehow conflicting with his Linux stuff

DoP is sub par, DSD shoehorned into PCM frames and requires 30-40% more processing power to get DSD out compared with natively streamed DSD and I prefer to start at DSD256 for performance reasons.

That sucks. I suppose you could make the netbook an NAA. You may have to download a fresh image, if that one got damaged. I do find the lack of galvanic isolation makes it sensitive to the computers used with it. I setup a fibre network to my NAA and am getting the best sound yet now. It completely isolates the Server and router noise from the NAA. But a low noise supply to power the fibre to copper Ethernet converter is required for best sound.

...

Trying to avoid a two PC solution. I have isolation/ reclocking on the DAC side already.
Also, DSD256 Streaming to NAA takes up quite a lot ofvbandwidth and you cannot use the typical home wifi network. Wired LAN needs to considered and even this have shown dropouts at DS256 like what Ray has observed - a subnet was created to get it going smoothly, so lots of plumbing work!

The other apparent reason for the NAA adoption is looking more like a fallback solution as there is simply no support for nativeDSD on JLSounds or Sonny's USB for anything other than Linux! So you have things like NUC on Linux/NAA and a server PC running Windows 10

Also, I am beginning to like the album art display when music playing and NAA being headless is pretty boring. So my preferred setup in the lounge is a sleek Skylake i7 laptop arranged in the stylish tent mode. Then again I have to justify Dual use to get approval, so workhorse during the day and entertainer after dark😀

Acko, what USB boards have you tried?

Amanero claims:"On Windows DSD256,DSD512 too", is this over DoP as well?

Amanero works natively on DSD256 using its ASIO drivers and is pretty good especially after isolation and reclocking. But this time round no support on Linux for nativeDSD
DSD512 does not work unfortunately, stuttering even though my PC is only about 40% loaded with HQPlayer. I am not sure if this has to do with HQPlayer or Amanero.

Sorry, I thought you were referring to the new DIYINHK version.

On my boards this is just the first order LPF, primary function to remove the DSD carrier. Additional filtering using an external output stage may be required to reduce noise further.
Thanks
OK, first order is pretty basic. SACD standard recommends 5th order.
Your additional output stage, how would it be?

I cannot do DSD512 either on my Amanero, but perhaps it is due to ES9018.
I hope the new Amanero in the works is going to support native DSD on Linux. Apparently the present version cannot do it.

I just meant to get the best out of Sonny's DAC.

You still get to use the same GUI. Nothing is different with how HQplayer functions, except you have have the NAA connected to the DAC, and you don't have to have the DAC connected to the laptop.
