The diyAudio Firstwatt F6

Just to follow up on my review of the F6. Please remember I have efficient horn speakers that many consider too bright for their taste. I teamed my F6 with a new tube preamp I built.

4S Universal Preamplifier for 12A*7 Tubes

This design is a very basic circuit with minimum parts and with a RCA 12AU7 clear top has taken my system to a new level. Beautiful treble now with no harshness or edginess just a lovely sound. I probably needed a better preamp all along. I used good quality parts in the preamp build. I have built a BA3 preamp and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it and sounded great but I favor a tube preamp with my horn system. The F6 is by far the best sounding power amp I have heard with my speakers. My son after listening to it said "The sound is so clear" and he is not an audiophile.

Maybe Mr Pass will one day design a SIT preamplifier for diy'ers or I should say a diy preamp that sounds like a triode tube pre or maybe he already has and I have not heard about it. I know Passlabs sells some of the best preamps but they are out of my price range.

4-wire meters are cool.

🙂

Nice meter! In the distant past I could look at a carbon comp 5 percent tolerance resistor and knew them by sight . The extra band on modern resistors really caused me a problem . If I have time I measure all resistors for a project to make sure I don't get values mixed up.

I start projects also with measuring and selecting parts. Using a Keithley 2000.

Thank you. Just wanted to make sure.
Hahaha

You could definitely do a preamp with LU1014D

My feeling on the matter now is the best preamp is no preamp unless you actually need the gain.

Fluke or Kiethley?

4-wire meters are cool.

🙂

I was just set to buy a couple of Fluke Meters and now another option!!!

Can anyone advise a non-electronics based mindset which Fluke meters are best for building and testing the Pass Amps?

And, recommend any of the Kiethley DMM's to buy instead of the Fluke if this is a better option?

Two Flukes or one Kiethley to start the new lab I'm being 'forced' to build as well as any info on the new oscilloscopes that may be best.

Thanks,

just google for "Fluke for Pass amp"

:clown:

ZM,

Thanks, but nothing comes up under Linux on subject Had to give up on xpProblem. Was going to order a few Flukes to cover all uses when this 4 wire DMM was mentioned. I've looked at the pictures submitted on all Pass threads for consensus of which Fluke may be best.

If it is a better option which Kiethley DMM in anyone's opinion is best for Pass Amp build and testing?

any Fluke is good for Pass amp

Papa is teaching us all the time that brain is more important than meters we are using , and you don't need teuer ones , with 4 probes

4 probes are there for ultra-precise measurements ...... which you rarely need in amp building

much better to have 2 good ones plus several cheapoes (but proven ) than just one extraordinary

I don't think you need fancy meters to build Pass amps. Certainly not to check the values of parts. I've had a Fluke for many years and plan to get a cheapo meter to help setting bias, zeroing offset etc. I have a Hitachi 20mhz scope I've used for audio troubleshooting for the past 25 years. At this point, I'm more interested in a harmonic distortion analyzer.

For checking parts, I like this toy:

MEGA328 Transistor Tester Diode Triode Capacitance ESR Meter mos PNP NPN L C R | eBay

All Fluke meters are absolutely top quality gear.
I have a Fluke 289, and I have the Keithley 2015thd, but I also use cheap $10 multimeters too.
Depends what you want to measure. I'm quite happy using the cheap ones for certain tasks.

When I see Papa's bench, I don't see half of the equipment some people think they need to get started in this hobby. A friend of mine is the lead engineer for a major car stereo company. Most of his equipment looks antique and outdated. So while it's nice to have high quality tools, especially when you reply on them everyday, it's not absolutely necessary.

Hey. Some of that old stuff espescially HP gear is often better than a lot of the new cheaply made modern gear.
Papa does use an Audio Precision distortion analyzer. Those things aren't cheap.

I know My Fluke meter is better quality than my friend's bench meter. It looks like a piece of junk. But he's a very resourceful guy and doesn't a need meter with perfect accuracy. The cheap stuff today is easily as good as most older stuff. I have a 25 year old frequency counter that I could replace with a better one for $15.00.

Nelson needs the AP analyzer because it's pretty much the industry standard for measuring distortion. And he makes commercial products. Does that mean everyone here needs one?

I'm not arguing with you. I was actually agreeing with you.
I have some modern bench lab power supplies that are absolute junk compared with the older gear. Multimeters are a different story though.
You don't need to spend lots of money is correct, but some equipment is expensive, espescially if you want to take this hobby seriously and design amps rather than just clone stuff.
