Daphile - Audiophile Music Server & Player OS

Built Daphile Server

Built a Daphile 64-bit music server last night. Didn't take long to get it working. I only had a couple of minor issues.

Loaded the ISO on a SD card, but then had to re-write it back from the Daphile system to the SD card. Until that was done, the system was read-only. Why? Also, is there a way to see setup functions when directly connected to a monitor? Helps with initial setup of wireless or discovering the IP address of NIC.

System Parts:

ASRock Intel ITX w/Atom 1.8Ghz dual core
2Gb Munch DDR3 204 pin RAM
Tendra wireless dongle
Toshiba SD card for OS
PNY USB flash drive for music
ITX Aluminum case, with built-in multi-card reader

Used 192k DAC is Schitt Audio Gungnir. Listed it by name, as well as the motherboard built-in card.

Was surprised to be able to down-sample DSD-64 files to FLAC on the fly.
Very impressed. Will try to add Loki DSD DAC tonight.

So far I'm really liking Daphile. Has anyone done any optimizing to the settings or motherboard system to get best sound? Any recommendations?

Adjust or shutting off anything that will reduce over all system noise. Anything not having to do with audio or unnecessary to daphile. That sort of thing.

Is your DAC that sensitive to noise over USB? And does the noise level change significantly based on CPU activity? Have you measured the noise level?
 
I have seen what I'm suggesting done in other server builds with great success. Unfortunately, the software is obsolete and not supported any longer, like CPlay in the windows memory player. Can't do DSD, or else I'd still be using it and not trying Daphile.

Anyway, with that said, it's all about noise and jitter.

That's ok, if you have nothing to offer, then I'll figure it out on my own.

One reason I am asking is that Daphile is based on Linux, and already stripped down pretty well. As for what remains, it won't use much CPU so won't contribute much to noise.

Anyway, with that said, it's all about noise and jitter.

Indeed. And the first step would be to verify that they are an issue - and after that, verify that each step actually is an improvement, rather than believe random hearsay on the internet.

The creator of the software ran noise test.
The more unnecessary parts are shutdown the better the results, this includes in the BIOS.

Like I said cics memory player is not really supported any longer. There's even missing pages on the site. I don't know why.

Do you consider a vendor of a product that supposedly reduces jitter a reliable source for objective information?

Can you please point to where he actually measures the effect of CPU load on DAC jitter?

The more unnecessary parts are shutdown the better the results, this includes in the BIOS.

Here you go Julf. Don't know if it refers exactly to what you are asking for, but it does for what I'm asking about. Which is again- Can anything be shutdown in Daphile to improve performance? I'll take care of the hardware part.

It could be that the generous person who put together the CICs MP has passed on or not available for some other reason. Maybe they're planning their next great system. Can only hope for the best.

And that is exactly what the measurements *don't* show. They show jitter measurements of different DAC setups, but there are no "before" and "after" jitter measurements after all his software tweaks.

And to answer your specific question - no, from what I have looked, there is nothing unnecessary or non-audio-related running in Daphile that would reduce the CPU use by even 1%.

Julf, you are reaching. 😀

Anyone who built the CICS Memory player will tell you that sound was better with tweaks that were made to the OS and hardware.

Where's the proof! I know, I know.

That's ok. I'll do my own before and after tests with the Daphile server.
