What about phase and tonal balance with such system?
I would like really listen to such a system with a symphonie,
. For rock...yeahhhhh agree but dangerous for .the .ears...like when you listen the Wall from Pin Floyd.
but for a lounge, bass integration is for .me the.most delicate matching. Also with mid bass....

Best one that I ever heard. I cant tell cause I heard to many in the last 35 years! Most impressive was surely the huge Sphäron Hornsystem from Acapella AudioArts in Germany.
The best that I ever owned personally was the old and wonderfull Apogee Fullrange, driven by ML Amps. ML-3 for the Bass and a set of briged ML-2 for the Mid and High, driven by a ML7 ans several different sources!
Sadly I cant show Pics from this setup, cause I lost all no digital Pictures in a flooding some ten years ago!

Off Topic but in the spirit :

???

3.7 ..... 🙂

Sounds impressive Frank ..... !

Heard this set up at the Bristol What HiFi Show, was pretty blown away. Affordable it is not.

JBL Ranger Paragon

While not the best sounding of what is currently out there, it remains my favorite. I have yet to find a loudspeaker of this size that even comes close to matching the aesthetics of this unit. Acoustically, it remains a premium performer. At one time, circa 1957, this unit was JBL's signature loudspeaker system. With a technology upgrade of the drivers, some acoustical tweaking of the enclosure and horns, it would be formidable competitor in todays high end marketplace.

Regards,

WHG

I use a very old pair of Magneplanar SMGa's . They have one quality I think the Gold Medal winner . You can play normal TV though them without wincing , Cagney and Lacey even has moments of great sound ( 95% not ) . Then the commercials come on and wow someone worked hard on the sound . I am building some OB speakers to try to get a similar sound . 15 inch bass , 12 inch mid ( 12 Lta ) and Swan Isodynamic tweeters . These should be able to party better than SMG'a ( I nearly killed them with some Hypex amps recently . the Hypex clips far better than I guessed ) . I will try the tweeters with the Maggie's . Not sure I like the recent Maggie's as much . Seem a bit sterile.

One thing I learned from them . EQ and perspective are different . Some sound tracts can have dreadful tonality yet still do some magic . The old British film Alfie comes to mind . The sound is typically cinema , yet it is so very real . Like listening to great music in a slightly odd large acoustic .

I often wonder why people love the Quads more than the Maggie's ? To my ears the Quads are Bronze Medal . This is because they need everything just right to do the magic . My perception is that the Quads are less detailed . One reason might be that the hi fi dealers don't like them and have dammed them with faint praise . BTW , Maggie's have great timing in Linn speak . Also , no one needs more than 2 speakers for home cinema . One needs great speakers . Also great mono needs 2 speakers as we have 2 ears . You know when you have good speakers when mono sounds equally as good as stereo . Often the recording being the only question . Dolby 5.1 sounds to me like drop out . The sound comes and goes . I prefer Hafler arrangements with passive decoding . Also that sounds better with low grade sources . Digital processing seems to make them worse . Hafler is actually real deal decoding .

Klipsch Jubilee are my favorites. They are very compelling.
Good to hear since I'm about to build a pair, however, with an upgraded bass bin.

I've heard many setups that's been great on some areas. For instance Soundlab electrostatics, some horn speakers, DIY open baffle speakers, Lansche Audio and Göbel. However, there are very few setups I've listen to that sounded good in many aspects. I think the best I've heard here is Overkill Audio speakers with DEQX and my own active CBT36 with subs. None of these are without flaws and think there are room for quite bit of improvements. Pictures below of both.

Klipshe Forte 2 was a favorite of mine . It looks like it hasn't a chance . The sound is both refined and powerful . It should be a disaster , it is a million miles from that . I dare say the Hersey will do much the same . Never got it to work for me . That was the double shock of the Forte . No great problem to get is to work . You have to have an open mind using them . Trendy stuff doesn't always work . Naim NAP 250 did which surprised me . La Scala is hard work . They will deliver if everything is right . Problem is they are larger than life and addictive when so . The Forte hints at that nicely and is fine when sounding like a real piano . Klipsch seem to get the same kiss of faint praise as Bose . I like 901's and can see the point of them . If Bose had to go from the world I would understand . Klipsch I feel to be more worthy .

Both have their proponents , none i would have personally , too much coloration to live with ...

I absolute agree with that . However prejudice verses reality , sometimes these workhorse speakers make me happy in ways the supposed greats don't . To my way of thinking any speaker with a box and /or a crossover is doomed . The ones I am working on cross at 250 Hz and 7 kHz on a 2 x 4 foot baffle . That's as near the the ideal as I can get . I call it the Caruso effect . Tradition has early recording at 500 Hz to 2 kHz . Probably true for the overall system used . The stampers would probably show some output between 250 Hz to 6 kHz . This is still available if we work hard at the playback ( the Laser turntable will find un-played portions on 78's ) . I always suspected that the operatic voices were popular as they stood a chance of sounding realistic . To the extent that Caruso is still a preferred performer .

Another idea I want to try is the 1936 Voight pipe . Nearly all modern UK homes are about 8 foot ( 2.4 M ) to the ceiling . Most wood comes as 2.4 M . So 2.2 M looks about right . At a guess 48 Hz from a very slim box . Said by some to do what transmission-lines promise . The drivers units SB acoustics SB15NRXC30 and Swan RT1.3W tweeters . The output will be 10 dB down at 50 Hz and 50 kHz . The crossover might be possible at 7kHz by using out of phase first order filter sections . That is to kill the rise in the SB above 5 kHz . Realistically 5 kHz will probably be used as the speakers are exceptionally flat used that way . Judging the critical drive unit spacing to get ideal cancellation will be the usual nightmare as drive units are not point sources . If they were life would be near impossible (comb filter effects ) .

The SB looks to be ideal for a Bose 901 clone if wanting to do that . As a big PA mid-range they were fine . In a bar set up high and EQ'd I'ver heard them sound great .

DIY Audio forces us to make the best speaker we ever heard .

For domestic harmony the KEF LS 50 takes some beating . Most will never own sources of sound better than it . It's distortion is as low as most of the best regardless of price . If I had a pair I would build two sub-woofers of the better type to sit under each LS50 as a stand . One sub is a bad idea , it isn't even space efficient if arguing that . Crossover as close to 80 Hz as is practical . That will give the rich sound that truly great speakers have . Bass you can not really hear opens the mid-band . Real music is no different . Some would use digital delay to suit the room . That makes it even more open . As an analogue fanatic I would use placement as a better option . If it were the bass being digital I wouldn't mind . Alas it is the mid-band that might need it .

A friend went to buy some Genesis speakers . The dealer said they had gone out of business . My friend bought the company . This a is a true story . The friendship an incidental . Gary certainly agrees with you as he put his money where his mouth is . I have no idea how old and new compare . Gary and I love maths so sometimes write to each other . We started by discussing filter curves and saying none truly represent music .

Here is a big cat to set amongst the pigeons . Saying the best speaker is impossible . The reason is ,it is a complete system that you are hearing . The speakers are just the widow to what's inside . I will exclude the room as that's too obvious . The Klipsch La Scala is amongst the worst and best speakers I ever heard . Same speaker in different situations . When I say worst I truly mean that . A speaker that often favours amplifiers that no one is buying . It took a very brave buyer and store owner to get a sale . They are sublime when right . They probably are wrong on a Health and Safety basis .

Default What's the best pair of speakers you've ever heard?

This thread is about the best speaker that YOU have ever heard, everybody knows that what's best for you may be be the worst for someone else and that some will agree to disagree, for me dollar for dollar NOTHING is better than panels and i do mean ANY panel, a box is a box and no matter how good the box it will never play like a panel BUT you do have to like them and not everybody does, the most important is that YOU buy what YOU like not what anybody else tells you to. live and let live. Life without Acoustat is possible BUT senseless.
