No reason at all to use a lossy format for any of the serious audio types who visit this forum. Storage is cheap, bandwidth for music at full res is tiny. People are routinely streaming gigs. Flac, Ape and "Apple *lossless" are full res no compromise compressing schemes. Any lossy format is a compromise to your standards of hifi. This is a game of inches.

You are right, different ball game. It is not our choice its theirs. I would say the highest bitrate is very likely to be the better choice, but if forced lower? Who knows? It probably varies from song to song
And if I want to listen to web streams? Got some that stream in lossless formats?
It's trivial to make a mic with basic flat response. I have a bag full that I paid $2 a piece for. No biggy. It's rarely the mic that's the problem.
I was talking about Youtube recorded videos not what people record at home themselves taking care to get the best response possible. Yes the Panasonic capsules have been around almost forever, I have several measurement mics I made myself from those, How someone records the Youtube video is important. All the ones I have seen of speaker playback is useless on Youtube simply because we don't know how they recorded them or they just sound awful. Maybe they used professional mics made for voice recording like a Shure M57 or similar. Recordings using their mobile phones isn't exactly going to be great.
Using the mobile phone would be better than a Shure SM57.
SM57s are ok for close-miking snare drums and guitar amps but pretty much useless for anything else.
Good quality small-diaphragm condenser microphones would be my first choice for recording a stereo system.

Depends. If you're looking for noise rejection. and not extended high end in many cases the 57/58/SM7 variations are a great tool. If I were using a phone however I would get that 39 dollar measurment mic from PE I can't imagine it not being a good omni.

They are all great for close mic'ing but once you get a bit further away the SM57 response looks like this:http://www.shure.co.uk/dms/shure/pr...e_sm57/frequency-response_sm57.gif?1255946776
Close up the proximity effect raise bass and things sound a lot better but at distance it will always sound like cheap transistor radio.
Something like this would be much better suited to the task in hand:
Oktava MK-012 condenser microphone. Oktava-online - only genuine Russian made studio microphones

Is this the one? Note, no transformers, the photos shown have some components in place but no wiring of said components. The "starting price" is set at $400...? The " buy it now" is set at $70,000.......Yeah, OK!
The ad says to go to the "products" homepage to see the applied schematics.
I'll cruise over there to see this magic amplifier.

I see there are no still no offers!
I sent the seller the following message.
(Nice amp, I see it has invisible wiring. Ambitious price though, would you accept payment in fish? I have some nice farmed salmon to exchange if you want)
I wonder if he will send me a reply 😀
