Murphy,Just out of curiosity what do you use to boost those frequencies?
I guess everyone is coming to an agreement here that at A10P is a better all round driver ?
I use electri-Q plugin. One of the only good eq you can find.

I guess it all depends what you prefer, dynamics and weight in the bass and midrange vs highs extension.
A bigger driver has advantage and trade off, but I prefer larger drivers.

I prefer the dynamics and weight in the bass and midrange ,since I consider myself as rather sensitive to high frequencies. Now I am confused again with all the different opinions without mentioning the actual drivers. For someone reading the last part of this post can everyone summarize what they feel good about each drivers. Yes, knowing that it is only their personal opinion and almost all of them are being used in pencils.

first, I think paper and metal will make a huge difference. I personally cant stand any metal cone, paper for me.
a larger driver will give you more dynamics and impact, but will loose a bit of highs compared to a smaller fullrange. You cannot EQ dynamics, you can EQ highs :). If you cannot eq, and you will use subs, maybe then the a10p could be better for you, but in a setup where you can eq, I dont see the highs a problem at all and if you dont have subs, the a12p will be more fun I think.

Murphy,

Have you tried Foobar2000 with the "Graphic Equalizer"? I personally prefer to use the miniDSP.

BTW, you hate metal cones, yet you boost your paper cones right where the metal cones have their emphasis. Have you actually heard the A10(M).3?

Bob
Yes, I used to use the foobar equalizer, but the electri-q is much more clear to what the eq is actually doing and sounds better.
what is the minidsp, in foobar you mean?
No, I havent heard the metal driver, my comment was more about my general taste. I prefer paper to metal cones.

There are two eq's in fb2000 -- "Equalizer" and "Graphic Equalizer". "Graphic Equalizer is a 20-band eq and far better than "Equalizer".

miniDSP is an external box between the DAC and amp(s).

Try the A10M. It has a much better controlled break-up than the normal metal driver. But then again, I do prefer the paper. A10 for lighter music, A12 for heavier. I have both side by side for an easy swithch.

kk, do you EQ the A12p? if so, what frequency? I EQ the 5khz to 10 khz region since about a week now. I was about to sell the alpair actually, but now I really like how better it now sounds. This EQ setting definitely makes the driver sounds amazing.
When you look my measurments of the a12p, you actually see a emphasis in the highs, but what I hear seems to not correlate the graphs...

These drivers are closer to each other than they are to most other drivers (brands). All of them are very good. The papers are closer to each other than they are to the metal. You won't be unhappy with any of them.

Myself -- if i could only have one of the 3 -- i'd choose A10PeN in Frugel-Horn XL (the treatment on these makes a serious improbement if i do say so myself)

Bob: if I didn't comment on this already - nice grain pattern work on the walnut

kinku: so far I think I'm probably the only one who's heard all 3 drivers (10.3M and 10 & 12P) to express anything definite - and my personal choice of the 10Ps would be based as much as anything on the mundane practicality of WAF - I'm not as lucky as many to be able to accommodate larger or multiple enclosures in their main listening system (Dave's probably the local champ there, wouldn't you say, Jeff? )

as the succession of my posts 29, 55 and 59 above would indicate, the more I think about this, the less certain I am of anything except the reasons behind my compromises ;)

To anyone trying to decide between the 10s and 12s, I'd say that if you have the room to accommodate the larger enclosures for the 12s - I personally think it'd be a waste to put these in any small enclosure - go for it, and if you love them, well then "that chrisb guy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about'

trust me, he already knows that :D
