Ok - it powers on and shows the product image - when I push menu and down button- doesn't go to the menu - I input a rca video source and push select and down ( and up ) - the screen blinks then returns to product image - that's it - please tell me I'm messing up and I didn't get taken on ebay !
hmmm from my knowledge with my qa-1650, i'd say your's is a bit messed up...
Try the computer input. see if that one works.
On my panel, my rca and svid works, except it outputs black and white, no colors... just greys?!?! odd stuff... BUT the vga works wonderfully!
like you said though, if your hold down select, you can change the input modes. and you still get nothing?
did you hold select and press up twice or down twice to cycle between different modes? or just once in either direction?
I have this blinking problem before... but usually when i switch tot he vga mode. Because my vga mode is too high (1280x1024 at the time..) so it tried switching modes, saw it could not do it, and switched back...
Note: if you plan on trying to use the vga, make sure your in either 640x480 or 800x600 and 60hz... anything above 60 or 70 hz and the panel won't accept it, or it will simply go blurred like you can't catch the channel 🙂
Also, if ever you get it working and your brightness is too low, let me know, I know what variable resistor on the board to turn, to hack up the brightness :-D

problems. problems, problems
thanks for your reply - I'm trying to get a manual I found here - the link- but my mac won't unzip the file for some strange reason- I'll go to an internet cafe that uses windows and see if they can print it - I also tried to use the vga input and realized I didn't know what that 3-row computer input was- How do I go from a normal mini vga connector to this sp. connector - Is it Sharp only or is that a common connector? I live in mexico so I'm sure the local computer store , which is a joke, won't know either. The seller assures me the unit was up and playing video right before it was shipped but is out of town and unable to get me his method- I'm too paranoid and think it's some kind of ruse to delay the obvious.I also bought a remote on ebay but it's for the 1500 so only have partial hope that it will work. I heard here that 1500 to 1800 can share the same remote . Do you have any knowledge of this ?Can you tell me if my method of accessing the menu is correct(push menu , then then up )? thanks alot for your help - Kurth

Re: problems. problems, problems
Hey 🙂
If you check here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ndexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting
This is what the cable is supposed to look like... That grey cable is the VGA one. 🙂
You should have received a vga cable along with a power supply (as bare minimum) since the vga connector uses a proprietary type connector.
If you do a search here, you might be able to find info on making your own vga connector if you must. 🙂
I'm not sure how hard it is to do, but it is irritating considering you hoped to have a fully functionning panel.
Personally, if you can return the panel, I would do that instead... if you still see you can't get it working...
As for the remote... bah you never really needed it. Everything is pretty much accessible from the menu. Like you said, to change display types, simply use the SELECT plus UP or DOWN arrows...

Possible Sharp QA-1650 fix?
Hi guys. I have a Sharp QA-1650 with a good LCD, and it recognizes all the video inputs, but the LCD fades to black after having been on for about 5 seconds. I don't know if those parts might be of use to anyone, but I don't have much invested in it, so I'd be willing to sell it or part it duuuurt cheap. I have a feeling that there is a capacitor in there that just isn't capacitating anymore 😉, but that would take a while to find and I don't have the time. Also there are no bad pixels that I can see (and I'm pretty good at spotting them). Let me know if I can be of assistance

thanks Alan - I decided to buy another while I wait and see what I can do with the sharp and a remote- I hope the new one will work out of the box. - I bought a proxima ovation 820c- As soon as I have one working I'll do an order for the usual suspects. I do have one question related to the sharp. Who can work on these units ? And are the resources availale for working on them oneself. thanks - Kurth

Kurth,
I don't think that anyone works on these anymore. The only way to service them is to replace components, and these have been out of production for so long that I doubt there are many spare parts out there if any at all. If you have resistors, capacitors, or potentiometers that need tweaking or replacing, then you can do that yourself if you are so-inclined, but that would be a nightmare to figure out I think.

update on qa-1650
hello - just to update and warn buyers who are purchasing sharps' w/o remotes- my unit ( 1650 )would not work - just received a remote I purchased on ebay for the 1500 - pushed Input and bingo - image - I almost melted. Lesson learned- don't buy a panel w/o the remote or you are asking for an expensive paperweight. thanks _ Kurth

Kurth,
Actually you can still select inputs without the remote by holding the "select" button and then click either the up or down button on the panel. That's not very intuitive, but it does the job!

Hi Alan - actually that was my problem - it didn't work - i don't know if it was the buttons on my panel or what, but that's how this thread was started. Anyway , today, I feel alot better. As soon as i pushed input on the remote, I got the video image . Both s-v and rca worked so i am a happy camper- it does seem, from all of the post i read, that others might be suffering the same defeat- that's why i posted the remote warning. I know when I buy my 2500 or PO 944, it will most definetely include the remote- by the way , I found the remote on ebay($40) by searching for "sharp remote" in case others are on the lookout. Now that it works, I'll go to your page about cleaning - thanks for your help- Kurth
