The Pass Pub: The High-End Off Topic Thread

I'm with ya Thomas, there seems to be a little confusion around here regarding holey, smokey and a dog so long it can sniff it's own ***.

I think I'm going to have a drink a little earlier than usual so I can relate better.

Thomas, I'm still on track for the smokey holey thing. It is Friday night after all. To the rest of you...

:drink:  :grouphug: and

....after confession I trust?

[...and that could take a while!]:devilr::devilr:

Ahhhhhhhh- today's mission iz to drive for a couple of hours with a buddy and help him check out a tricked out Thorens TD 160 and then drive back and meet up with like minded audio dummy's to check out a new listening room and see which one of them passes out 1st....

I'm not a thorens fan but sounds like the perfect day to me.... If I was last left standing.

It's hiz 1st TT and thus iz better that not having a TT at all. I serviced a lot of TT's in my time and I like the simple Thorens. Tweaked up I find them to be just fine az a entry to mid level table.:D:D:D

Hey I agree 100% they are good TT. Just not my style. I love simple. They sound great tweeked even untweeked they give most a run for the $. I guess I should have said the styling is not my cup of tea.

Have fun

Have returned from mission with TT still in one piece (this is good for us).

Purchased from guy that haz been an audio fool for 30 years now and haz gone full circle of starting out with McIntosh toyz and changing everything out until now he iz back to having McIntosh toyz again....

TT has been through modding processes here - Thorens Tweaks

Have not had chance to listen to it 'cause still need a decent phono pre...

Came witha Grado Black cart - but buddy haz a Shure 15 standing in the wings to try out too.

This iz his 1st TT - so not to bad a way to get started carving new grooves into vinyl with shaky hands.....:eek::eek:

nice lamp

almost Genie like

lookout , ZM can sneak from it , if you brush it gently

I will let him discover things for himself for the most part - While he iz still uzing the Grado Black cart. I would not want to see him wipe out the Shure because that one haz the high end stylus on it. I don't know if he will be capable of fully understanding the process of how to properly mount and align a cartridge - we shall see. ;)

Agree with ZM.....

...and to think that when these could be bought new you could pick up two or even three Garrard 301 TTs (used, and often with a decent arm on board) for less money than a new Thorens 160.................... In Ireland we say "God be with the days"!! Of course the enthusiast magazines pushed the likes of Thorens whilst Garrard tried to make ends meet by making alloy dog guards to keep your pooch in the back of a wagon!!!:mad: And the BBC moved to Technoics SP10 and various German heavyweights.

Thorens TTs [ and many others] and - especially the nasty arms they came with, were just bland sounding with not much good to recommend them. The old Lencos were better by far - even as originally sold. You can mod a thorens provided you start with replacing the arm, but they simply have a limit beyond which you cannot improve them. [The Lenco though can be made - with a lot of work and a go few $100 - into something which takes a lot of beating.]

There was much non-hi-fi stuff around back in the 70s - my pet hate were the early SS Mack amps with Maggis at the end! Good draught screens in a leaky house is the best I can say for them.

Any other contenders for 'nasty, very expensive vintage components???;);)

@ c2c....that lamp looks awful well rubbed to me....did it work for you??;)
@ Jacco....Well spotted!;)
@ Red Volvo....have a look here::D

<http://vimeo.com/14303004>....Never tried this, but looks fun!;)
