The point being made by my question which brought the above response was to do with the now long forgotten and ignored topic which this thread is purported to cover!🙂

I wonder if something like ultra-linear operation would be possible with dual-gate power MOSFETs (or JFETs, for that matter).
Why would you? If you decide to go for SS anyway, you can build far more linear amplifiers.

While Ed and Scott resolve their differences, perhaps I could attempt to continue in the spirit of this thread, which is 'old fashioned' analog design.
One thing that bothers me is mysterious noise problems. Even with a really quiet shunt regulator, a circuit can be really noisy.

In case that the circuit was inherently noisy, no quiet shunt regulator would help. You have to start with high quality, low noise design.
