F5 Listening Impressions & Discussion

Let me get this straight!
I know at least a few of you amp geeks built more than one amplifier, and not just Pass models either. Any direct comparisons? I think I saw someone say that F5 sounded better than Aleph-X.. Then, how it compares to Zen series?
I now have F5 built and have all parts for Aleph-X and if you tell me which one is better it would save me a great deal of time.. Really don't want to end up building a number of amps just to figure for myself.

Thanks for responding. Since this thread or the other thread has not responded to my questions other than you? I suppose I entered the forum to late to invite a discussion which might had been discuss in the 700 pages previously. Maybe I should search the internet for other forums. Thanks again

Ray

The search function is useful... but the question you asked about using longer leads is valid, but it's not for this thread per se... so you should ask about it, OR start ur own thread asking about the effect(s) of longer lead length going to output devices in high bandwidth amps... that would belong in the Solid State section, imho, since it is a general question, although your interest is in the F5...

As far as the sound, the local builder here, Rick, says that the amp sounds better without the thermistors being in the circuit. I am not a builder of this circuit yet, and don't quite have it in my head, but I suspect you just remove or do not install those associated parts...

You should be more patient, Ray... in reading the thread you'd probably learn things that will come in handy if you actually try to build one... and things that are interesting no matter what...

I am still highly impressed with Rick's implementation of the F5.
It's forcing me to take a look at some things in my "reference amp" as a result. DRAT!

I can say for sure the F5 sounds better than my Zen V1 with 2 amp CCS and my gain clone and my Mini-A. Have also had 2 others listen to my F5 for several weeks. The F5 beat out a parallel 300b tube amp and an Aleph 4.

The comment over and over again is, "I can' believe how quite this damn thing is." Both are now gathering their own parts to build the F5.

Just based on the low parts count, you should build it. If you hate it, someone here will take the parts off your hands. You can bet on it.

Hmm, ok:idea: I dont have to choose between F5 and BA2:scratch2:
Great idea, and simple
If I go easy on the F5 power, I can use a couple of fine heatsinks have stored fore years
And then use my new bigger ones fore the BA2
Yeah, I actually think it would be a good choise :cheerful:
I love new ideas, thanks Nelson 🙄

Well, which one sounds better ? does it matter, really ?
How good can it get
Is good still not good enough
At some point, isnt it just about different, and more a matter of personal preference
And maybe really just about setup matching etc

BA-1 and BA-2 board order going out in two days- we should be getting enough for everyone who is interested.

AudioCap have 10000uf/40V Rifa listed, at an ok price

Wonder if we could hope fore a fair discount if all EU builders here could agree on either a 33000uf or 47000uf, 40V
But maybe we are not that many

A Panasonic 10000uf/35V cost much less
A whole bunch of those might be very powerful 🙄

I'm doing mono-blocks. The thermistors will be inserted, but after stabilization I will remove them. I'll be using Dale/Vishay resisters, and TO-220/MUR2020 rectifiers, two 10 x 6 X 2.5 heat sinks, power supply board and transformer for each block.

I haven't seen any mono-block F5's. If you know of any please let me know.

Mine is mono down to the AC filter and power cord.

Danny's Super V

I'm trying to compete with Dodds 15 watt battery power tube amp and buffer, for the upper frequencies on GR Research Danny's Super V speakers.

Super V pics...

The Dodd Battery PA arrived!

I'm going in blind with F5, hopeful it will compete with the Dodd.

I auditioned these dipole speakers. I haven't found any that comes close. The low frequency at 18 hz cause rattling windows using a servo open baffle dipole. The upper frequency sounded like Magnepans on steroids.
