Why is it saying"no disk"

Please can anyone advise me - my cd player keeps saying "NO DISK" when there is a cd in it. I am lost without my music, has anyone any ideas as to why it is saying this and is there anything i can do to get it to play again? I would be grateful for any comments. Angie
