= Lab subwoofer =
[Lab sub plans and information]
Designed by Tom Danley and using the Eminence Lab12 driver, which was
specifically designed for use with this sub. Two of this driver is required.
It measures approx 1.1 x 1.1 x 0.55m and is a 27 Hz subwoofer, designed
primarily for pro sound use in stacks of 4 or more.
The only factor which may prevent use in the home is its size.
DIY enthusiasts are lucky to have free plans for a bass horn designed by
a horn expert with Tom's credentials.
= Pi Speakers bass horn =
[The Most Powerful Subwoofer in the World?]
Wayne Parham of Pi Speakers has designed a bass horn, the 12Pi basshorn subwoofer,
which is similar to the Lab horn but with some improvements in performance:

- heat exchanger to increase thermally limited power handling
- larger so that stacks aren't required: 1.2 x 1.2 x 0.75m
- push pull driver mounting results in more linear performance and lower even order harmonic distortion
(similar to the role of a shorting ring, but more effective and with no added cost)

Even with 1600w input into a single horn, distortion products at 50 Hz are 35db below the fundamental!
At 30 Hz, however, distortion products are only 7db down.

[12Pi vs Lab sub]

The driver used is the same as the Lab12.

Small bass horns of interest for home use:

* Tuba 18 - 18" cube - tiny for a bass horn
* Autotuba - approx 14" x 15" x 32"
* Table Tuba - approx 30" x 30" x 18"

It appears that Bill has plans for some of the smallest horn subs on the net,
using an MCM 8" subwoofer driver. Some of his PA designs use much larger cabs.

These are very large horns designed for prosound use, hence they are very large,
use pro drivers and have extension typically to 50 or 60 Hz only.
Probably not a good choice for home use.

The FAQ section of the site is very informative.
