How about this: use a tube socket and sacrifice a tube (blasphemy!) for the pins?

Never tried it, but sounds reasonable.

As a bonus, if an actual tube can handle the amps/volts through the socket, it should be good as a cable end\

In fact, in the hey-day of tubes (a few decades ago) one could get commercial cable-end connectors (male and female) for both 9-pin and octal sockets/plugs. The latter a little on the large side, but used for h.t, mains, etc. I have not seen such for more than 15 years, though.

But I believe there are very elegant and smaller solutions available nowadays as per previous posts.

Actually, you can still get them. The octal plugs are still available at triode Electronics, and at Antique Electronic Supply.
