So what was it like when you were a kid and monolithic opamps really were carved from a single rock?
You paid $5 for a uA709 from PolyPaks, aware that it probably wasn't a top-line part but hoping the defect was something that only showed up at a temperature extreme. (And that $5 would easily fill the gas tank on the family sedan.)

Then you hoped you made a good guess at the compensation component values, since High School students had only a vague idea of why they were there, much less any real understanding of how to select values.

Ahhh, "The good old days" - known as "These trying times" before the corporate restructuring.
