A pair of the Tang Band buyouts from Parts Express landed in my possession and I needed something to get by until I could do my permanent in-wall build. So I used a pair of Silver Flute W20 I had on the shelf and made this FAST.
Waayyy better than expected. The tang band sounds really good for $9.99. Measures really well to. Bass from the silver flutes doesn't blow me away, but enough to rattle my chest without my sub on.
There was a big efficiency difference so I used a minidsp to do the cross over. Right around 300hz. Tang band doesnt stress at all and the 8" silver flute can take a lot of abuse.
😀

Ya, eventually it'll be replaced with a matching right and left. That center in the picture is REALLY good. Enjoying it emmensly. Hard to believe it but I may have found something I can call permanent.
It's a SEOS12 with the DNA-350. It severely needs subwoofer support, but that is a given in Ht anyways. I have an acoustically transparent screen over them.
The FAST is really fun though. Was so easy to make though. I might add another silver flute for an MTM and then linkwitz transform it to make deeper bass. Then it may actually be a pretty top tier stereo setup. Even as is I'm loving music on it.

Very nice. I am looking forward to my own FASTing this winter when I get those EL166ens back from Dave (no pressure!!!). Dave posted a picture of a miniOnken with a pair of sliver flutes and fullfrsnge in MTM that looked really nice. Those 6-8" silver flutes look like pretty promising alternatives to the EL166, do you have any comparative impressions of them?

The FF85 for those are nearing completion.

I don't really have a comparison. The applications are totally different, only similar in that they are crossed around 300hz. Different slopes, different alignments, etc.
I'm newhere. I have been looking up this term but can't seem to find anything. What does FAST stand for?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Subwoofer assisted? That's cheating. Not fullrange anymore. 🙂
How's about Fullrange Assisted Tweeter Technology FATT? Somehow folks would definitely not call that fullrange anymore.

Understood. You mentioned an optically transparent screen, do you mean a projection screen??

I think it's a great way to design a speaker, cheating or not. 🙂
My two favorite speakers from the last two DIYFests were FAST systems. Alpair 6m + SDX7 this year and FF83en + 2xEL166 from the year before. I think I've said that a lot on these forums, they made quite an impression on me.

Sort of like an OB system but with a box? What's a good howto design thread I should check out?
There has been lots of work done by Dave at Planet 10: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/144099-thread-tysen-variations-fast.html
There are many others as well if you do a search.

Alpair 6m + SDX7
A6 not A6.2m
A7.3 + 2xSDX7 in the prep for manufacture stage. And µBlade.
EL166 MTM was with FF85k.

Ah, right. Too many model numbers to remember! 😀
