Threw this together this past week for fun.

Working fine on the bench. 20V rails with 360mv across R9-R10.

DC offset 40mv after warming up for about 20 minutes.

This heatsink is just warm at the moment, so upping the bias will
be no problem later.

Now to build the other channel and take a listen :)

Just wanted to post a picture of a Zen V.

Raka -I haven't listened yet, just built the one channel on
the bench to see if it would work. I will now build up a second
channel and give it a listen. I haven't built much using point to point
wiring, except the SOZ. The Zen 5 wasn't so hard actually. I just
tried to keep the components close. The spacing of the FETS was
due to using holes that were drilled and tapped previously.

chris ma - The Inductors were from MCM. Unfortunately they
don't carry them in stock anymore. I've seen complaints that they
are not of high quality, but i've used them successfully in many PSUs.
I too will be looking for a new source for 2mH inductors very soon
now! It would be nice to know where to get enamaled wire in the
same gage, because rolling your own couldn't be that hard.

I really just posted the pics to see if there was more interest in the
Zen 5. As soon as I do some listening i'll post thoughts here on this
thread. Probably in a couple of weeks (maybe less) ;)
(i'm finishing a Pearl too!)

Very nice Moe29, have you gotten a chance to listen to it yet?

Well I got these huge heatsinks that I was originally going to use to build a 30-40 watt SOZ. Then I realized I needed a balanced pre to get the full use out of it and the added cost of transformers has put that on hold for now. my Alpeh 2s are still being built, for a first DIY attemp I think you'll be surprised, I'll have to post some pics.

I would like to hack at the ZenV5, because its simple, and of course thats appealing. These sinks can definitely handle 2.5A @30V

In figuring the rails by the calculations i got a bit confused:

20V rail example
(20 + 8 +3) / 1.4 which gives 22 V AC -- ok.

(30 + 8 + 3)/ 1.4 gives 29 ---- ??
How can a 29-30V secondaries give 30V after regulation?

Or do I say (30+8+3)=41 and go with 40V secondaries
For each channel I'd like to use 625VA@ 35 or 40V, would this be ok?

John H.

p.s. sorry for the threadjack

dimensions = 21 3/4" X 15" 1/2" baseplate 2.5" fins

This layout works well, designed for using the very good Arcol HS type resistors mounted underneath the board bolted to heatsink. This was only saved in one of the computers that got stolen during summer, will do the cad again, let me know if anyone wants the layout.

Ingvar, That's a nice looking PCB.

I hope my point-to-point pictures don't scare people from trying it
that way. It's such a simple circuit it's fun to do that way.

I am finishing my Pearl project right now. My turntable will be
arriving next week so i need to have the Pearl completely finished
and looking good enough to go in the equipment rack. :)

Then i'll finish the other channel of Zen5... i'm really interested to
compare it to the original ZEN with PSU upgrades.

I'm glad to see more people building then Zen 5... we need one
of them in the Pass DIY Gallery!

Just realized all resistor numbers are wrong, put them in from memory, not checking with NP´s schematic so got them in disorder. Will rectify and post new placement drawing and partslist. Also, one reason i rearanged is now the layout allows for using ICEL (or other ) 47u polypropylene cap instead of electrolytic.

gonna wait for the midnight hour

It´s midnight in Sweden and i´m doing what this is all about, playing records, and realised that i had´nt verified what You all know, Emmylou Harris, Red Dirt Girl is one of the best records ever made. Actually wondered why the Zen v5 sounds, at equal level, so much more powerfull than my Accuphase P300 . Will elaborate and put a sugestion forth to Mr Pass and Gray Rollins but there´s someone at the door (thirsty friend?)
