In spite of sloppy guitar playing and a voice that sounds like a tomcat with its tail caught in the fence, I have fond memories of playing Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere to and from the beach the summer of 1969. I actually think After the Gold Rush was his finest effort.
Years later, when I lived in La Honda, Neil lived up the road and played at Boots & Saddles Lodge one night during a pub tour. He had his roadie/manager ask my girlfriend if she would trade her rare La Honda Slugs softball team t-shirt for a Neil Young t-shirt. When she said no, the guy said, "You don't understand, Neil really wants it." She laughed and looked at Neil who was standing 10 feet away listening to the negotiations and said, "No, you can't have it!" It was pretty funny to watch!
