I've been away fro a while so I wasn't able to get in sooner, but I think you're on the right track by looking at your room. I came to the same conclusion recently when I purchased some nice Sennheiser cans.
When you have talked about your concerns about the bass response in your "perceive", I wondered if you'd ever find peace, if you didn't have your room modelled and treated for nodes and optimum placement. If you haven't seen it, here is a great article which talks about the up to 20 dB swings you can have in the bass that your room can create.
