Obviously headphones and speakers have their pros and cons.
But they obviously win hands down for listening on the move...

I take issue with that.
My Stax Signature system has a quoted frequency response of 7Hz-41KHz, and is anything but junk.
Notice that I used the word just.
That means: don't buy headphones just for specs, you need to listen.
If you can't listen, don't buy them.
I hope it's more clear now.
And btw let's educate the distributors, shall we?
Don't ever buy anything without listening.
It's their loss: if you can't listen, you won't buy.
shin,
I've been away fro a while so I wasn't able to get in sooner, but I think you're on the right track by looking at your room. I came to the same conclusion recently when I purchased some nice Sennheiser cans.
When you have talked about your concerns about the bass response in your "perceive", I wondered if you'd ever find peace, if you didn't have your room modelled and treated for nodes and optimum placement. If you haven't seen it, here is a great article which talks about the up to 20 dB swings you can have in the bass that your room can create.

Someone who could model your room and give you a great lesson in acoustic treatment can be found at:

Good luck with your amazing speakers.
