Audio Driver Protocols, programs that set standards for allowing data to be communicated between the system's software and hardware. Some common ones are:

WDM, the Windows Driver Model

ASIO, Audio Stream Input/Output, forms the backbone of VST, has variable bit depths and sample rates, multichannel operation, and synchronization. Low latency, high performance, easy setup, and stable audio recording.

MAS, the MOTU Audio System

CoreAudio a Digidesign driver, for Mac OSX.

Latency, buildup of delays
Windows audio driver could be 500mS!!! This throws off performers. ( This is why I was skeptical of any Microsoft based digital audio schemes )

ASIO driver can reduce it down till it is unnoticable. ( I still like the idea of dedicated hardware in the signal path, without dealing with hard disk, user interface, or multitasking )

DAW Controllers, control surfaces

These often work by using MIDI System-Exclusive messages.

Soundfile Formats

Wave (.wav) Microsoft Windows format

Broadcast wave (.wav) allows text strings, otherwise as above.

Wave64 (.w64) Sonic Foundry, Inc, now Sony. Similar to above.

Apple AIFF (.aif or .snd) Apple

Sound Designer I and II (.sd and .sd2) Digidesign

Soundfile Sample Rates

32k often used by broadcaseters for 15khz bandwidth, and by those who wish to conserve memory.

44.1k Was the standard because of CD audio. Considered the minimum for pro audio production.

48k was adoped early on as a standard for pro audio. Especially for hardware based digital audio devices.

96k used with 24bit, for DVD ( I believe because the extra data can usually be reduced with lossless compression )

192k, also used with DVD production.

Soundfile Bit Rates

16bits for CD, and considered the minimum for pro audio prodution. A theoretical dynamic range of 97.8dB ( more than analog tape, and way way more than vinyl )

20bits was considered the standare for high resolution. Theoretical dynamic range of 121.8dB

24bits offering theoretical dynamic range of 145.8dB. ( far exceedes human hearing, and any of the analog stuff it has to work with, including ADCs and DAC, and amps and speakers and preamps. )

( digidesign uses 48 bits for internal computations. They have special expensive processing boards for the host PC )

Record two tracks at a time with zero latency; whether you have a PC or a Mac, your song ideas go down in real time, real easy. Its size means you can take it anywhere you take your laptop, yet it's packed with features that make buying it an audio no-brainer. MIDI input and output, high quality mic inputs, 96kHz/24-bit recording (better than CD quality)-all the stuff you'd want without the fluff you wouldn't. The US-122L: the answer to your recording needs. The US-122L is also part of TASCAM's exciting new TNT Bundle

Does 192K/24bit, FireWire

<<Pushing the limits of what an audio interface can be, TASCAM has launched the FireOne - a FireWire Audio Interface with shortcut keys and a weighted & illuminated jog wheel to inspire creative interaction with the artist's music. The FireOne is the first stereo audio interface in its class that records two mic ins and two outs over FireWire at 192kHz/24-bit audio resolution The most unique feature of the unit is its large, weighted, backlit jog wheel, which allows musicians to zip through their song while the backlight provides useful feedback such as a visual metronome.

The FireOne features a pair of mic inputs with phantom power and pad switches. A front panel guitar input allows convenient direct recording of guitar or bass. MIDI input and output are also provided for 16 channels of MIDI. It's the first FireWire interface in its class to record and play at up to 192kHz/24-bit resolution. It includes multitrack recording software, so you'll be set to go right out of the box. In addition to its weighted & backlit jog wheel, the FireOne has transport keys and eight shortcut keys to control functions in most popular DAW applications.

2-in / 2-out FireWire Audio Interface
Up to 192kHz/24-bit audio resolution
Two XLR mic inputs with phantom power and pad
1/4" high impedance input for recording guitar direct
Two 1/4" stereo headphone outputs
Weighted, backlit jog wheel
Transport control keys: rewind, fast-forward, stop, play, record
Headphone output with level control
Eight DAW shortcut keys
Stereo LED meter
MIDI in and out
1/4" Footswitch input
Buss powered through the FireWire connection or use the included power supply
