I can add that the harsh static sound seems to be synchronised with the CDROM motor.

I guess - maybe the cdrom's digital out does not shut down and puts out garbage while spinning the disc. Try another unit and see what happens. You may even use a shielded coax cable to connect a unit inside your PC this way for testing if it does not have a play button.

Thanks for reply. Yes, trying another CDROM seems to be the way I will have to go.

I asume that the behaviour I have described is not the usal behaviour for CDROMs when used a CD transport?

Check to see if you can get an i2s signal off that old creative cdrom.
I seem to remember that some models had it clearly labelled on the circuit board.

Take that into your DAC and you've got a decent transport.
