I can't seem to find the mention of the ess chip in the udac. Jkeny, do you have a source?

I'm sitting on the fence between the super pro and the udac.

How's SNR and DNR different? That just doesnt add up. Looks like the DA part has worse thd than the builtin opamp, similar opa365 has thd in ppm range.

EDIT: 98SNR because of the 16/44 usb codec ? -ridicoulus.
- at least they should reveal a level vs thd plot .

Finally got my finger out, and had a listen to this 9022 dac on a little pcb I made...

Click the image to open in full size.

I read about the 50Mhz local XO for the 9022 the day after I sent the files off for pcb manufacturing, currently using the 12Mhz from the receiver.

I'm using spdif in as I have plenty of spdif sources, using a wm8804 as the receiver.

Excuse the mess on the PCB, I had a duff 8804 initially. Using a simple 3v3 reg for the three 3v3 lines (two for the 8804, one for the 9022)

Very pleasant sound, and driving headphones directly, which is a surprise!

This is the first circuit I've designed myself from scratch, so quite pleased that it works!

Well done Will.
You will be better served with a lower jitter clock.
Even better served feeding it I2S directly from source
Yes it drives most headphones!

Thanks John.

I've no i2s sources, so went with the wm8804 so that I can give this dac a try. It's a nice, musical sound, way beyond it's price.

I have a 50Mhz XO on the way, and it'll be easy to drop the feed onto the 9022.

Has anyone had a chance to compare AKM 2496 to ESS 9022? I know it is a long shot but maybe there is someone out there...

Woodenhead: I'm in the same situation as you with plenty of SPDIF sources.... would you have one of your boards for sale?
