2010 Ottawa DIY Audio Get Together

Greetings from Ottawa

Where the local DIY audio community held its first get together event on 19 June 2010 at the General Burns Community Centre. I’ll be posting some pictures below. Feel free to comment, ask questions, post your own pictures, etc. Many thanks to all who participated and made this event possible.

An overview of the set up in mid afternoon. The room had nice dimensions, a cathedral ceiling, and good acoustic properties. Equipment was set up at one end, and we were listening in the middle.

The first speakers we listened to are Rick Gorman's RBRs (Recession Buster References). SB Acoustics SB29RDC tweeters and Scan-Speak 8531 5.5" woofers in a front ported 2-way.

Second set of speakers are Rick's Dynamic 1S (as the two-way above, a Clearwave Loudspeaker design). Dayton RS180-4, TangBand W4-1337, and Vifa XT25 in a three-way ported monitor. Rick makes his cabinets. Look at these baffles!

Adam Bergeron's center channel. Four CSS EL70 crossover-less in a ported enclosure.

Note the striking resemblance with Mark Kravchenko's surround speaker enclosure. Very impressive cabinetry work, especially considering the angles.

Ron Urquhart brought some vintage speakers he purchased real cheap to discuss if they are worth fixing. These are JVC Zero 4. Look at this ribbon tweeter. Not sure who made it but it sure looks nice.

It was indeed a great time. I was surprised at the low turnout but we still had a full day of listening with much experimentation. While some were able to stay the full day, others came by early and some later. Some people droped by, left for a time and returned after meeting other obligations. The point here is: don't write the event off if you have other commitments that will not take up the whole day. We had the hall from 8 to 8 and pretty much used every minute of it.

This event was education for me on so many levels. I am glad I was able to attend. Many pictures were taken and I'm sure as people get the time to sort and post we will all be able to see some of what was presented.

A big thank you to Pierre for his organizational skills on this one. Not just the hall booking but the documentaion of the proceedings will go along way to keeping the details straight for the future.

Also, I perhaps more than anyone would like thank Bob at CSS and Owen from OPC for donating some great prizes.

And thanks to all the folks that patiently answered my many questions. I vote to do this again. I thought the location was fine.
