not zeners but i have 1n5402's , i could swipe one from a parts amp or get one from radio shack

I don't trust Radio Shack diodes (or any of their parts for anything important). I've purchased several packs of doides where multiple diodes were leaky. One from another amp may be OK. Check it before you install it.

no sir, stripe matches stripe side on pcb markings

Was the diode a standard switching diode (not a zener diode)?

Did you check it for leakage before you installed it?

it is a fatter version of the one i replaced, it checked good but ill check it again

That's likely a 5.1v zener.

There should be some 1N4148s in the power supply are, possibly near the PNP driver transistors, depending on the amp.

Ok i got one (D404) 1n4148 and installed it and protect light is off

I don't know if that will help your problem but it was part of the protection circuit and could have been causing it to protect early. You'll have to completely reassemble it and run it again to see if it helped. If not, we'll have to check a few more things.

I'm assuming that all of the parts are now in the board. If not, you should reinstall all that were removed for testing.

reinstalled and tested works great playing music, did shut relay off once playing a test tone but dont think my 30 amp power supply can handle the full load of that amp. any suggestions

This amp will require closer to 100 amps to produce full power.

Where did you install it that you had to use a 30 amp power supply?

i was using my bench supply and using my Ipod to drive it

It's probably OK.

In the future, it would be less confusing if you only used the term 'installed' to refer to the proper installation in a vehicle and powered by the vehicle's battery/charging system.
