What do you listen to to test you new creations?

I do notice a lack of R&B/soul/funk titles or maybe even some soundboard boots. Country also... even the "fringe" stuff like Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Béla Fleck, etc.

Anybody think of another piece with an anvil?

Close. The opening track from the soundtrack "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou". Track is "Po' Lazarus." Hammer blows on railroad spikes in time with the music. Good for checking dynamics.

BTW, not sure everybody can tell when a drum is playing on a system with strong bass to 50 Hz or to 25 Hz - the ear fills in fundamental tones quite invisibly and, to the ear, quite convincingly. No kidding. Before you say "This record has 30 Hz notes on it...." make sure you've SEEN those notes on a real-time spectrum analyzer.

As an illustration, here a RTA seized on the Saint Saëns 3rd symphony (Zubin Mehta , LA ) that pedrowska likes too. The 20 Hz is here, but is mostly perceived as pressure fluctuation, through the reactions of the body. Anyway, without "this" organ note, the symphony gets castrated.
