Its got the USB DAC chip built into the cable, powered from the USB bus. Only $20.
The opposite extreme is the cosecant from Wavelength Audio.
What I'd like is something in the middle. A kit board with the USB controlled and DAC chip(s), but DIY power supply and analog output stage.
Maybe get a cheapo commercial thing and rip the board out to do my own mods?

So the samples come with an evaluation board do they? That wasn't clear from the web site. It looked to me like the evaluation kit cost $149 US.
Looks like the PCM2707 is a nice option to use with a separate DAC chip. For the built in DAC then the PCM2702 seems the way to go.

Here's a couple ideas
The first is a real product: the TwinDac Plus, also available as a kit
http://www.diy-systems.com/
click on "Electronics"
The other DAC is not available yet as far as I know, but the folks at Ack! dac are working on a USB version of their dac.
I have not heard either, but Bert at bd-designs is one of the few people whose opinion on equipment I trust.

Good it may be. Good it better be since it costs $2000 US!

DIY Eden USB DAC
But is seems (I can't read chinese) to be no longer available.
