four daytons in a cardboard box. wood bracing, crossbracing, silver wire, tweeter, oil cap, autosound spray high tech damping juice, cardas billet copper connector, laying on a pink rug with a cat..

probably quite a bit! it's 2 ply 600 lb test cardboard. yeah. the good stuff.
ha.
the owner of these loves 'em. he made me a painting worth 2k for building him these. it, btw, was on rumpled brown paper, but nicely framed. i guess we have the same sense of humor.
the "speed" in my profile does not refer to drugs hehe but a hd chopper and '57 porsche...far more fun, far far.

he escaped out the bottom mounted port.
next time i'll do dual 2" ports instead of a single 4".
oh, but how ever shall i compensate for the change in Vb as poor wolfgang slowly starves?
Blackie!
Hey, you don't remember me but a couple of years ago I stopped by your shop with a friend of mine (a girl). You showed us a pair of speakers you were working on. I don't remember what the main driver was but it had a tweeter that was mounted in a glass or acrylic tube that was mounted on spikes on top of the box. You hooked them up to a black receiver and played some tunes for us. Later, I saw them in the guitar store on Ludlow St. Sounded good.
What were those speakers? I picked up some Altec 755Es a little while ago and realized that the recommended boxes, 2' cubed, were close to the size of those speakers you showed us.
So I was wondering whether those drivers were, in fact 755s.
Oh, and what about those little round aluminum amps?
Best,
KT

Humph, Schrödinger damping.
Sounds great, but you can never really be sure if the cat made any difference.
I want to name a one of my future cats Schrödinger, but the wife has me overruled.
(57... Bathtubs are better? or is it a spyder?)

Tell her that your future wife might be more agreeable.

i think those were some 7" focals i was messing with in mdf/rosewood boxes. i built those for nyNOISE show 2002.

enough about looks
tell us how it sounds
i have not heard those daytons myself but their very low sensitivity (85dB) scares me
to me personaly low efficiency drivers sound constipated
something about poor transient response, no dynamics, dont know exactly
but as long as the owner of the speaker is happy...

yes they don't sound like high efficiency drivers. however with four the efficiency is reasonable considering the owner runs a cheap ss rig.
in this configuration they sound a bit thick but not objectionally so. on axis i felt they sounded tizzy (cone ringing i reckon) so i designed a low box which puts you off axis at all times. also they are not directional which in this case is desirable as they are in a painter's studio and he moves around a lot and listens while he works.
i feel these sound better than the MCM version which came out a while ago and was put into a commercial design by the bottlehead boys on the west coast . they came up with a treatment to make the cones ring less.
my friend jc put 'em (the old MCM version) in a big open baffle line array, i think 12 per side with a raven ribbon to cover the top end and a sub. that worked very nicely in a 4000 sq ft space with a 16ft ceiling.
in all, at the price these guys are well worth experimenting with and there's been a lot of diy precedent...
re: the cosmetics...the owner of these and i saw this show together:
http://guggenheim.org/exhibitions/singular_forms/flash.html
these speakers were partially designed to make the same statement about commercial audio that these painters and sculptors were making about art.

two cats????? that's an INFESTATION

i believe so, the more of the drivers used, the better
i am familiar with that design, seen the web page
recently a friend of mine gave me two pairs of very old magnavox fullranges taken out of old consoles
speakers are in pristine condition, alnico, extremely efficient, sound absolutely wonderfull, no tweeter needed, sweet midrange, offcourse lack of bass
i put one pair in small closed boxes, nothing fency to help the bass, so they are a little bass shy
i replaced original teac two way crapy little speakers on my girlfriend teac mini hifi, amazing improvement ...
volume is set half what it was, no equalized correction engaged....i am just so sorry that i dont have a dozen of these drivers so i could build a serious line array
imagine line array with dozen of drivers each with efficiency over 95 dB
plus subwoofer it would be perfect
anyway, if you are happy with those daytons, thats what counts
i was happy with small 5" radio shack fullrange cat. number 40-1041, i got some when they were discontinued
this little driver is amazing, goes all the way up, great midrange, i wish i had bought more of those....
two cats????? that's an INFESTATION
noooo, four and more is infestation
believe me, two cats is the same amount of work as one cat
if you have one cat, you have to keep it bussy, interact with it
if you have two, they pretty much take care of themselves
have you ever observed a litter of kitties?
