I have the same Canon 17-85 EFS IS USM.
It is far better than Nikon Nikkor AF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED DX what I have on D80. But Canon has a common problem, broken diaphragm unit flex cable:

I have repaired mine already.
I have some flex cable, if you has error 01 or error 99 issues.
But I think, your broken lens has a diaphragm unit which is good yet.

Thanks Gyuri, good to know. My old lens broke in the plastic bayonet. Crap. This one seems good. I read some about it (after I baught it) and it gets good reviews exept for the somewhat poor light sensitivity.
It was a lucky star story that the store were out of the lens I wanted and I went into the pub and searched the second hand site. I called the guy, met up with him after ten minutes, baught the lens for 1/3 of the new price and afterwards we went to have some german beers together

Just rented one of these for Nikon. Need to take some interior building shots with nice wide angle. WE have cool lense rental programs that let you try before you buy.
