When solving the dreaded hum problems, it is sometimes quite difficult to "get a good handle" on the source of the problem - sometimes, more than one!
It seems that most of the correspondance assumes that you have a good grasp about how power systems work and the different notations, and you need more specific directions.
It can be extremely confusing , even when quite used to it, and you end up going around in circles, tearing your hair out in frustration.
I'd suggest you contact a good hifi technician (not a saleman) in your area and either take your gear to him, or see if he does house calls.
Perhaps a call to the London Audio Club will help also - unfortunately, it's a very common problem, especially in diy.
